It just kind of feels like being in hell. I wake up and go to work and do my job without an LLM, to the same standard that earned me an Exceeds Expectations a month ago. A senior manager tells me LLMs are "table stakes" for any business. I go home and log on to one of the half dozen sites that I used to use to learn about technology. They're all full of people telling me how learning is for chumps now. I log off and go hang out with my partner's family. The fifteen year old shows me a video generated by "AI".
Can we please stop this? I know I'm preaching to the choir, but, goddamn.
And that's not even mentioning the part where my close metamour and housemate feels like she can't go outside because of the roving government murder squads. Or the fact that yesterday it was 10°C in mid January. Or any of the rest of it.
I want a refund and a do-over, please.

@noracodes By means of invitation, preach away, it's a good sermon.

@noracodes More tangentially, AI boosterism seems like it's starting to take over even On Here. If a bit of preaching to the choir helps keep this space what it is, I'm all down for it.

@xgranade Yeah. Its upsetting.

@noracodes it cant be reversed, only driven forward toward its own destruction faster

@xgranade Yeah. Its upsetting.
@noracodes I just don't get it. So many people I used to respect are picking up the booster party lines, and it makes no sense to me.

@xgranade I think there are a lot of ways to get there. Believing in the magic is one way; having very low-level skills in something that LLM-based systems can raise the floor on is another. There's also the power of cognitive dissonance; if it's fun and feels good to use, it can't possibly be broken or evil!

More seriously, though: there is no do-over. We are experiencing the end of the empire. Take what joy you can in that, at least, and then get your hands on the barricade and push.

@noracodes Hot take, perhaps my own synthesis of your posts, but AI is a part of that. AI is one of the last gasps of a dying power structure.
Perhaps by opposing it, we can save some of what would otherwise have gotten caught up in its implosion.

@xgranade Oh, yeah, absolutely agreed. Its not at simple as not using it, but not using it is definitely *necessary* for that preservation to take place.

@noracodes If it's alright, I'll toot my own horn just a little bit to demonstrate my agreement. It's not much, but I'm trying to do my part to make sure we can preserve books without encumbering them with AI.

@xgranade Please, I'd love to hear what you've been up to in that regard.

@noracodes Forking Calibre to remove AI from e-book preservation, somewhere it never should have been in the first place. https://blog.rereading.space/rereading-because-books-are-art-and-art-is-labor
