@mms So /only/ about 8 years since I started using it regularly, but I seem to remember the biggest issues were:- Muscle memory for copy and paste shortcuts (C-c, C-v) were very hard to adjust from, plus the kill/yank terminology was confusing.- That C-g is normally the way to get yourself out of a confusing situation, and that seems very non-obvious.- Mark and Point, and how to C-space to start selecting text, the idea that you weren't holding something down constantly to select text was weird.- The naming of buffers, windows and frames. So alien.

Question for Emacs wizards. I found a strange thing which I could not understand after reading the documentation (https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Initial-Options.html) and even after reading the startup files, shipped with my Emacs 30.2.If I use the -q option — Emacs will add site-lisp directories to the load-path. But with -Q option — there are no site-lisp catalogs in the load-path. Why is this happens? Note: the option --no-site-lisp is not used in the both examples. So, as I understood after reading the https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/eintr/Site_002dwide-Init.html, even with --no-site-file (or -Q) the site-lisp catalogs should be added to the load-path in the both cases #Emacs #EmacsLisp #elisp #AskFedi

I haven't been able to stomach that, even though I presume that's a lot of my competition.I simply can't get to an interview. Historically, I've done three interviews and got the job each time, because I'm a real human being who is friendly and chatty and presents himself sincerely (or, that's my guess, anyway).#Christmas miracles appreciated!In #Ireland with my partner, but we've lived in different places and would move happily. I've a year experience doing an IT support role the last year, but have transitioned to this stuff later than usual. Before I've done: bartender; bicycle courier for Deliveroo in #Berlin for two years (best job ever); private tutor for five years in #Lyon (mostly piano but also maths, Irish, English, flute, tin whistle); bookies clerk for a short period; a few other odd bits - one highlight was writing reviews for a theatre company.Oh, very comfortably fluent in #French, pretty fluent in #Irish (my first love), and intermediate #German (which I would love to have a chance to go back speaking and learning).Tech-wise, it's been mostly on the #Linux / #Emacs / #Lisp side of things. Have you ever wanted to have Theo de Raadt give you his fortune in your GNU Emacs session? I made a package some time ago which serves exactly this purpose. I also remember being suggested to put it on MELPA, so that is exactly what I did.After creating the pull request and fixing all of the issues that stopped it from being pushed into MELPA, it couldn't make it on as it was a pretty repetitive package, and there were about 5 other `fortune`-esque packages with much more customisability. However, I now have a better package because of MELPA's guidelines, and I believe that I can still give attention to the package, even if not through MELPA.That's why I wanted to talk about it here, because maybe you are interested in having a fortune package for your GNU Emacs.
