@damien @pwaring my own transgression is I buy Apple products despite some of the utterly heinous shit they get up to.If I genuinely had to buy products only from ethical sources in this day and age, I likely would not be able to buy any kind of smartphone, laptop, or practically most modern tech on the basis that raw materials come from questionable sources. We have to pick our fights and our individual lines in the sand.

@psyhackological Yes. And FreeBSD can run Linux binaries, using the Linuxlator (linux64.ko) translation layer. Works perfectly 🙂

Thank you. I haven't seen as good an overview of a complex project, and its context, in a long time. Years.#desktop #laptop #usability #LSU

@stefano Compaq Contura Aero 4/33C was my first laptop as well, I learned to code with it. And it is still a size of a laptop I love to use: small and lightweight enough to be taken anywhere.

@vaidajm I used to always get Dell, but lately it has become more hit and miss: you either get an eternal model, or one that breaks after 5 minutes of moderate use. I've been looking for a solid alternative since, no luck yet.For your current machine, I assume the fans still work? In my Lenovo the fan failed *twice* (also I have to make sure the GPU is properly initialized or it overheats for some reason but I doubt that's the issue you're having).

@liam Some progress has been made. After reseating the SSD, the BIOS now sees the SSD. I was able to add it to the boot menu and I'm now able to boot into the OS.But...issues persist. The BIOS reports there is no battery and simultaneously Debian reports the battery is fully charged. The laptop shuts off immediately if I pull the power. After reseating the battery cable, the BIOS now recognizes the new battery, reports it as 100% charged as does Debian. Except....the laptop shuts off immediately if unplug the AC adapter.So....a problem lies elsewhere. The laptop is unable to switch from AC to battery power despite being fully charged. The laptop is now displaying an LED blink code. Currently digging thru Dell's service manuals for this.
