@hbons For anyone doubting whether paying for free software is a thing, remember that when all the commercial stuff is enshittified to death, free (as in free speach) software is all we will have left that is usable. We support who we can, in line with our feelings and ojlur finances. But remember that loyalty to a big brand name is almost always 100% one-way. "We don't care. We don't have to. We're the phone company." sums up the corporate attitude.I am a bus driver (for my day job), not a billionaire, but I still contribute regularly for a few things. The free CD database, for example, that I've used at least once a week for ever, and a few YT channels, like the one that got shadow-banned by YT, because they advocate for EVs, and aren't scared to say what they think about shady business practices.

@fluttersh @MinistryOfGoodIdeas No, the main focus of the project is security and privacy while still being able to use Android apps like normal. There are other projects that don't focus on security, like LineageOS, but they don't offer optional confined Google Play services, only microG, a reverse-engineered implementation of Google Play services. So what you're asking here for is either a GrapheneOS fork with all security measures stripped, a LineageOS fork with optional Google Play services and Protect API and other features like storage scope implementation, or a complete new project based on AOSP that has this functionality. If you root your device, a lot of safety checks will fail, and therefore a lot of apps and functions will just not work. Therefore, I think no one will make an effort to get less app functionality and security. Less security means more attack surface to get your data leaked, which means you're also less private.

@mathieui@piaille.fr Thanks for engaging with this. I appreciate the pushback, and I think some of your concerns are worth taking seriously. That said, I want to clarify something about my position: TGPL (or any specific licensing mechanism) is just one possible avenue among many. The broader argument isn't tied to any single instrument. Regulatory pressure on governments to mandate that models trained on public data be returned to the public, expanded public funding for open research infrastructure, international treaty reform—these are all on the table. The point is strategic pluralism, not a bet on one tool. On the copyright concern: yes, major players have shown contempt for copyright. But that's precisely why I think purely technical or market-based solutions are insufficient, and why political and legislative pressure matters. The history of generic medicine access is instructive here—no single mechanism won that fight, but the combination of compulsory licensing advocacy, treaty pressure, and public funding reform produced real change over time. Now, your Luddite parallel: I actually think it argues for my position rather than against it. You're right that the weavers never reclaimed the technology. But the lesson I draw from that isn't “therefore reclamation is impossible.” It's that refusing or destroying the means of production doesn't work. What eventually produced change was organized labor movements that took the existence of that technology as a given and fought over who controls it and under what conditions. That's exactly the kind of struggle I'm advocating for here. The real question you're raising, I think, is about the subject: is there an organized political force capable of carrying this through? That's a fair and hard question. But it's an argument for building that force, not for abandoning the goal.

@ohir I do fear you are right.Right now it's quite some muddy waters, where several forks appearing. And some have even disappeared. These muddy waters need to calm down at some point. For a fork to be sustainable, it need to have enough contributors and users. Contributors need to cover development, needed infrastructure, support and (what you mention) finances to keep things rolling.I don't think it's sustainable that we have so many forks appearing these days. The strongest ones of them should unite and setup a non-profit organisation, which others could join as well. Perhaps using a similar model as Codeberg. With such a joint effort, the marketing towards end users can be much more uniform and targetted, which would be easier for users to relate to. Just as Firefox managed to take over the position of Netscape (even though Firefox was spun out of Netscape, so not directly comparable).I would truly encourage @librewolf, @zenbrowser, @Waterfox, @konform and other forks to get together and look at the possibilities to collaborate on a broader scale. I don't say they should abandon their own "uniqueness", but that they can find a way to help contribute to a more healthy and sustainable environment for important forks to actually survive and be sustainable. Have something "shared" at the core across all forks, where they can build their own uniqueness from. Have a shared vision and mission statement, have a united front for a privacy respecting browser family.

@dazo First, please don't get me wrong: Like anyone else, I don't want my data to be sold, and at the very last by the browser I've been using as my daily driver for anything internet for years. But the question I can't find a viable answer for is: How can Firefox become a sustainable organization?Selling our data is a no-go, that's for sure. But how do they make the money required to not only maintain but also invest in Firefox?

  • @spacebuffer@fosstodon.org yes! It fully supports two-way federation and interacts well with Mastodon and Lemmy/Piefed/Mbin.

There are granular visibility controls so you can have some categories federating and some not.

There's also a feed view if you really can't give up the feed 😅

  • @spacebuffer If you want to host an instance for a group of acquaintances and perhaps federate it with only some instances and not others, you can use Friendica.
Friendica also allows you to create public and private groups, but most importantly, it allows users to set up different circles for posting (friends, relatives, bowling group, birdwatching group, etc.).

  • @spacebuffer@fosstodon.org NodeBB is meant to be supported Federation, I haven't seen much from them along with the extent of there Federation for Forms based most people end up using Lemmy or Piefed, but Mbin is a good mix between the two.

From my experience Mastodon can be pretty heavy, I've ended up moving to Sharkey for a few reasons, Lightweight-ness being one, the other benefits are stuff like the multiple names for custom emojis, S3 Support, A Private Chat system for Instance wide chatting and Custom Emoji reactions.

Obviously I'm not sure of your use-case, especially looking to not federate the instance is a strange choice.

  • @julian @sam

Indeed I also felt this was a bit much but then ago mastodon's focus doesn't seem to be on being lightweight.

NodeBB seems very interesting, probably not for this project but maybe for other things, does it support federation?

  • @sam@break3.social @spacebuffer@fosstodon.org 8GB?! Those are insane system requirements for what is basically text and media exchange.

An intra-org forum for 800 running NodeBB would be 2GB max, 1 CPU, and you'd really only see 100 actively using the site, if that.

    Mastodon is a beast eh.

  • @spacebuffer@fosstodon.org You are gonna want the higher specs of 8GB min, Especially if those 300-500 people are going to be often login in.

What's your use case of a de-federated Mastodon Instance? Would it not be better to just federate to specific instances (Not sure if you can do that on Mastodon but I know you can on Sharkey and that uses less resources)
