This is the closest I've been to one of Australia's rarest honeyeaters. This magnificent bird is a Regent Honeyeater, and is critically endangered. There were a good half dozen captive birds in the aviary attached to the Taronga Zoo animal hospital. These are likely part of the captive breeding program to try to rescue the species.
