I had this recent exchange with my wife:Wife: What is FreeBSD?Me: It's Unix, an operating system, and it's awesome!Wife: Oh OK. The only reason I asked is because I am finding these FreeBSD CDs around the house. FreeBSD 12.0, 13.3, 14.0.Me: Yeah, I use the old versions as coasters for my tea mugs.Wife: *pauses, laughs* I can see that.#FreeBSD #homelab #tech #fun #unix #computers #freebsd15 #operatingsystem #awesome

Europe defends digital rights, fairness and autonomy.Open a laptop. Turn on a phone. You are in a digital room that answers to laws written elsewhere. In every office across the continent, the EU has no direct reach over the operating systems that we use in our daily life. What would it mean for the bloc to reclaim digital sovereignty?Could Europe build a shared system instead of living inside imported ones?Read: https://medium.com/@Diogo_Mendes/europe-is-a-digital-tenant-3f24b83e9cd4#digitalsovereignty #tech #opensource #privacy

My favourite experience regarding Wii homebrew so far has to be NetBSD. I wanted to use my Wii as a computer for a while now, and NetBSD being available as an operating system you can install and get going on an SD card and a Wii with the HBC is definitely the highlights of my Wii homebrew experience. I don't use my Wii much at the moment, as I don't even have a monitor I can use for my Wii yet, but I have used it for a while on a TV and it was nice.Networking is a bit hard, at least on the Wii however. I tried to get WiFi included in as a Wii image of NetBSD to burn, this was during my time on FreeBSD, and I just couldn't compile it. I was doing something weird where I would alternate between GCC and clang but that would have been a waste of time once it got to booting.Other than that, it was nice writing a fetch program entirely written in C using vi and man pages to get by. It was a nice break from writing things without an LSP to help, although I still love using modern features many editors provide, obviously excluding AI, so I will stick with that. I also found that Lua existed on it which definitely helped whenever I didn't want to write C.First *BSD post in a while, as I forgot to talk about the time I used NetBSD. I'll probably talk about Linux more at some point but I wanted to talk about *BSD a little again. Try NetBSD if you get the chance!#netbsd #homebrew #wii #tech #computers #programming

🤦‍♂️UK. ‘Students at the University of Staffordshire have said they feel “robbed of knowledge and enjoyment” after a course they hoped would launch their digital careers turned out to be taught in large part by AI.’Disrespectful to the students https://www.theguardian.com/education/2025/nov/20/university-of-staffordshire-course-taught-in-large-part-by-ai-artificial-intelligence#ai #tech #education

@ajsadauskas @luca Here's a good article on Hartley Computer: https://ia.acs.org.au/article/2017/acs-heritage-project--chapter-34.html"David Hartley (not to be confused with the British computer scientist of the same name) started his working life in 1966 as a civil engineer with Brisbane City Council. His work later took him to Namibia in southern Africa, where he was introduced to computing while conducting mathematical modelling of rainfall in the vast Okavango river basin, using FORTRAN on an ICT 1500."When he returned to Australia he decided that computing was more interesting than civil engineering. He started Hartley Computer in Brisbane in 1974 to develop software for the accounting profession, on the rationale that accounting could be easily computerised but that many in the profession did not realise that...."The new software was very successful – it was the only software in Australia designed specifically for small accounting practices. Hartley also designed SHEILA (System by Hartley for Entirely Integrated Ledger Accounting) for larger organisations. The venture included building hardware (the Hartley 3900) and an operating system. Both the hardware and the software were very innovative....“The operating system was called RT86, a ‘true pre-emptive multi-user multi-tasking operating system for the 8086 chip. It was launched in 1980, 15 years before Windows PCs had that capability.“Hartley Computer was one of the first mini/PC computer vertical market successes in the world, with ultimately 250 staff and 3,000 sites in seven countries. In the process I became known as ‘the father of computer client accounting’, and we won several awards. The success was killed by hubris and a messy divorce. Big lessons, only partly learned at the time.”

Maybe we need to update #RTFM. Actual manuals are rare beasts these days. You’re more likely to find the information you need online, whether it’s in the form of PDF datasheets, forum posts or Git gists. It should really be RTFAI, in which the AI isn’t what you think but stands for ‘Available Information’. But that’s a bit of a mouthful, so perhaps just RTFI. Or we could just say ‘Read’, followed (if you feel strongly about it) by FFS. RFFS?#tech #technology #maker #computer #computing

    I have a confession. I installed my Mastodon server software on my VPS that is marketed as a "storage" VPS. 😎 How awesome is that? 😎 It has a 1TB SSD anyway and 18GB of RAM, so why not increase the RAM usage? 😎 #mastodon #fediverse #selfhosting #vps #storageserver #tech #geek #itstudent #humane_tech #decentralisation #openweb #technology #sysadmin #bigstorage #ram #ssd #doityourself #coding #linux #serverlife #webhosting #diytech #compute #network #activitypub #awesome #engineering

Calling #typewriter users! Does anyone know where to source a manual for this? (Panasonic electric t36, or is there somewhere other than the top front to find the model number? 😅) This should get me back to writing when my hands are sore and I can't do screens, so I'm excited! I've used a similar one at work, but could use a refresher on maintenance, and if anyone knows where to find replacement parts/ribbons I would appreciate it! #maintenance #repair #vintage #tech #diy #boost #writing
