@dentangle as far as I know they both ultimately come from the same root word, from Norse borrowed from Latin etc, but the difference for me in our writing is that the Crusades were specifically named after the Christian Cross in the most direct political sense and still carry that denotation, for better or worse, depending on what you mean to say. Other words like across, crossroads and crossfire to me do not carry specific religious tone.
