Before I go into this, there are two types of responses to this that I have taken seriously so far.
One I'll call HashTagNotAllAI, which yields the obligatory "sure", but has the same smell. I'll leave it at that.

My anti AI stance isn't about tech, or not primarily about tech.
I don't like that it swallows up rainforests and produces unreliable results. Those are valid criticisms, but I actually agree that those are - in principle at least - solvable problems.
A knife is technology. I can use a knife to cut out a cancer, or to disembowel someone. This makes a knife...

@jens I'm strongly in the "yes, but..." camp here. You're right about the current hype cycle, funding, how it is used to affect people largely around the world.
I probably end up pedantic because of my technical perspective on it. I think there are even good uses for LLMs (text related work), but it's not anythink like the chatbots, agents, general code generators today...
For the general population, AI means those things today, and in that I agree.
Is this reasonable, in your view, or no?

That same argument cannot be transferred to a gun. The entire point of a gun is to hurt and kill; its intrinsic purpose is evil. That it can be used to hurt, kill, and potentially deter "baddies" doesn't change that. It may justify the use in highly select circumstances, but doesn't magically absolve it.
Generally, tools are neutral. A weapon is a kind of tool that is intrinsically evil.

... so, the balance of cost vs. benefit must be considered. Clearly the benefit of AI used in assistive tech is worth a much higher cost than when applied in many other areas.
But even a high cost doesn't make a tool evil. It just raises the importance of asking questions about the cost/benefit tradeoff.
The thing that bothers me is that some AI is a weapon, and it's a weapon of fascism.
I suppose it's much fairer to restrict this to generative AI/GenAI, but I resist such a restriction,...

@jens thanks for the excellent write-up. The last time I tried to make this argument with @davidgerard he blocked me. I'm guessing I didn't make my position clear enough to not be confused with a genAi apologist (me, LOL)

@ju @Trames nel merito, come ho scritto, sono agnostico sulla separazione delle carriere (che tanto non è il punto centrale della legge), scettico sullo sdoppiamento del CSM, positivo sull'Alta corte dove mi sta bene il sorteggio (oh, i giudici popolari in Corte d'Assise sono sorteggiati e può andarci addirittura chiunque), fortemente contrario al fatto che quelli governativi siano sorteggiati tra un elenco votato dal Parlamento. Ma sempre come scrivevo, il mio No è su una questione di principio.
("Governativi" era un lapsus per "parlamentari", ma visto che nelle ultime due letture la legge è stata blindata non è poi tanto lontano dalla realtà).

Polyphonic Tunes On The Sharp PC-E500
If you’re a diehard fan of the chiptune scene, you’ve probably heard endless beautiful compositions on the Nintendo Game Boy, Commodore 64, and a few phat FM tracks from Segas of years later. What the scene is yet to see is a breakout artist ripping hot tracks on the Sharp PC-E500. If you wanted to, though, you’d probably find use in this 3-voice music driver for the ancient 1993 mini-PC.
This comes to us from [gikonekos], who dug up the “PLAY3” code from the Japanese magazine “Pocket Computer Journal” published in November 1993. Over on GitHub, the original articles have been scanned, and the assembly source code for the PLAY3 driver has been reconstructed. There’s also documentation of how the driver actually works, along with verification against RAM dumps from actual Sharp PC-E500 hardware. The driver itself runs as a machine code extension to the BASIC interpreter on the machine. The “PLAY” command can then be used to specify a string of notes to play at a given tempo and octave. Polyphony is simulated using time-division sound generation, with output via the device’s rather pathetic single piezo buzzer.
It’s very cool to see this code preserved for the future. That said, don’t expect to see it on stage at the next Boston Bitdown or anything—as this example video shows, it’s not exactly the punchiest chiptune monster out there. We’ll probably stick to our luscious fake-bit creations for now, while Nintendo hardware will still remain the bedrock of the movement.

@kenobit al di là del giudizio negativo su Apple e i dispositivi chiusi... l'ipod nano 5 è quasi impossibile da riparare... ma il "quasi" è d'obblig: con un po' di manualità e gli strumenti giusti... lo ripari con venti euro, potenzialmente. oggi c'è anche un discreto business di negozietti di quartiere che riparano oggetti elettronici (qui a Roma, almeno, è pieno): è una necessità economica, prima ancora che etica, perché la corsa a cambiare cose che funzionano, è un po' il gioco del pollo...
