Arctic Solidarity. 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰
For those not familiar, Nunavut is a Canadian territory encompassing most of the Canadian Arctic including Baffin Island where its capital, Iqaluit, is located.
There are deep historic and ancestral ties, but also very current familial ties between Greenlander and Canadian Inuit peoples. There are international flights between Iqaluit and Nuuk.

Perhaps it is time for a GG who *only* speaks an indigenous language.

It's hard to swallow... but part of decolonizing the nation has to include changing our assumptions for languages.

@chris @pycomtois I'd be fine with that. Just need to change the requirements of the job you know. That one is a FR/EN job (right now), she promised to learn, and she has not even tried a little bit.
You can't be a manager in the PS without speaking FR and EN.
I totally wish we would add extra official languages to Canada though. Then we could have a different conversation.

@stephanie @chris @pycomtois unfairly, speaking English is never seen as a accomplishment... but as the minimum expected to be considered a functional human. With this I don't mean to say is ok for an government officer to not bilingual. A year of duolingo french while in the loo should be enough to read sentences...

It's astounding.
Like... my parents know about 5 words of English. No one in Québec City spoke English when I was born.
I worked hard.

Seriously, knowing French first helps in learning English. If English is your first language, French is hard to learn.
Mostly because French has explicit grammar classes while English has very little in comparison. -

The auxiliary prepositions.. take out, take off, take in, take up, take ... whatever...I don't want to believe a English speaker is better when learning Spanish/French than a romance language speaker learning English.

The one huge advantage is that it’s everywhere, so you can’t help hearing it all the time. Immersion is more effective than strictly book-based learning. The fact is, most Francos will watch content in English, while the opposite rarely happens, even among bilingual Anglos.

In my particular specialty, knowing Canadian colloquialisms is essential, yet I’m always baffled at seeing my colleagues paying no attention to French Canadian content.
Anyway, all this to say, it’s sort of force-fed to us, which, as unpleasant as it is, of course facilitates learning!

I was learning Spanish and German in college too, and they were both difficult, even if, of course German was harder because it was so different. Learning a language, when it's not taught to you as a child, is difficult. Period. It takes work and determination.

Indeed there are challenges when learning English from a romance language. When in doubt, I avoid those propositional phrases and favour more advanced vocabulary. Coming from French, it usually means using the anglicized version of the standard French word. It's almost cheating 😀 -

Montreal is about to be hit by a bad ice storm -- 2-3 cm of ice on everything forecasted. I hope they got it wrong, but if not, I may lose power for a few days.

I have a No Soliciting sign on my door, which salespeople often ignore, and I get grumpy about it. But, a Sonic fiber internet sales person just came to the door claiming it is now available here and gave me a card for two months free, so I'm slightly less mad about it. Though I suspect it's a lie. They've been sending me flyers for years and every time I check it is not available.
I'm gonna check again, anyway, as I hate the cable company and they're charging me twice as much for slow service.

Prepararsi al pi day 2026
Quest'anno mettere in piedi il Carnevale della Matematica del 14 marzo, che sarà peraltro la 195.ma edizione, non è stato per nulla semplice. Il motivo è che il giorno del pi day sarò sul treno per rientrare da Firenze, dove a partire dall'11 marzo sarà in svolgimento Didacta, fiera della didattica italiana. Ho, quindi, costretto gli altri matematti a inviarmi con congruo anticipo i loro contributi (e nel frattempo ho anche cercato di impostare delle bozze, non sia mai che riesca a raccontarvi qualcosa da Didacta a fine serata!), per cui non ho preparato nessun contenuto video da lanciare in contemporanea o in anteprima al Carnevale. E allora ecco l'idea di proporre in un post apposito un paio di news di MaddMaths! dedicate proprio al pi day e che sarebbero state decisamente vecchie uscendo all'interno del Carnevale:

After reading up on this a bit I can semi-confidently say that this branching process with d6s will continue infinitely. The highest chance of it terminating is of course in the first or second roll, but after that chances of terminating become infinitesimally small.
