    @tasket@infosec.exchange an official protocol handler would help a lot. Today there is the option of introducing a web protocol handler but the UX for it is pretty dogshit (Piefed recently implemented it, and the number of dialogues was too damn high!)

    That said I don't know if PWAs can register against non-web protocol handlers. That would be useful for sites like NodeBB.

    Testing a Continuous Printing Mod for the Bambu Lab A1 Mini

    There are a few types of continuous 3D printing with FDM printers, with a conveyer belt and automatic build plate swapping the most common types. The advantage of build plate swapping is that it automates the bit where normally a human would have to come in to remove finished parts from the build plate. A recent entry here is the Chitu PlateCycler C1M which the [Aurora Tech] YouTube channel had over for a review. This kit bolts onto the Bambu Lab A1 Mini FDM printer and comes with four extra PEI build plates for a not unreasonable $79 (€69).

    As also noted in the review video, this is effectively a clone of the original swapmod A1m kit, but a big difference is that the Chitu kit comes with all of the parts and doesn’t require you to print anything yourself.

    The different plates are prepared using a special tool that inserts G-code between the plate changes. Moving the bed in a specific way triggers the switch that lifts the finished plate off the magnetic bed by the plastic grip on the plate and loads a fresh plate from the stack. Here it was found that a small tolerance issue prevented the last plate from being used, but some sandpaper fixed this. Other than that it was a fairly painless experience, and for e.g. multi-color prints with separated colors – as demonstrated – it would seem to be a great way to churn out the entire model without manual intervention or a lot of wasted filament.

    Perhaps the main issue that is central to all of these build plate swap mods is where the plates go after they’re pulled off the magnetic bed: the padded box is a great idea for the first one or two plates, but after that you get your PEI build plates with parts on them crashing on top of each other.

    This is where perhaps something like a passive roller conveyer system could provide a nice gentle off-ramp, though this too would increase the footprint of the system. Regardless, the overall system seems to work well enough, allowing one to stack fresh plates in the chute and if you turn on build plate detection in the A1 you can even prevent the printer from trying to print on the magnetic bed.

    @fediversereport If they are smart they will fix a raft of fundamental UX pitfalls in current ActivityPub by defining a protocol handler for it.

    Email needed its protocol handler spec while it was getting established – and arguably still does – and I do think this is one of the ways in which ActivityPub is "like email".

    How to transport #MIDI over #network the easy way? #fedihelp So, my client just called me, and it turns out… I need to have his MIDI signal from stage at my #FOH, which is around 40m of cable.I got a CAT cable running with TCP/IP infrastructure anyways.I know that #RTPMIDI exists, but I never have used it.So I need something that takes #USBMIDI and makes it available 40 meters somewhere else. Or I need to send USB over 40 meters, doesn't really matter.I think the endpoint for the MIDI transmission will be VCV Rack on Linux.Must happen the day after tomorrow, so buying something is not a solution.I have available: 1 Ubuntu Studio 24.4 laptop. 1 Windows 10 laptop. 1 MacBook Pro 2017. Several iPads, something Bluetooth-MIDI working with one of the iPads. I used to have #midimonster but it cannot be installed on Ubuntu any more due to dependency shit.EDIT: See my own answer in 🧵 for a solution.

    I think I have identified a fairly significant flaw in how the #Fediverse currently operates. Hear me out.The Fediverse currently consists of all sorts of different systems - #Mastodon, #Friendica , #Pixelfed , #PeerTube, #BookWyrm , and so forth. And while they are all connected via the #ActivityPub protocol, they all have different functionalities and different ways of presenting themselves. Which is as it should be, because Diversity Is Our Strength(TM).However, it is here that the ActivityPub-based interactivity hits its limits - for usually, you can either experience the relevant system as it was intended, or you can interact with it, but not both - _unless_ you have an account on the same system (though not necessarily on the same instance).Let's say that you are a Mastodon user who looks at another person's BookWyrm page. You scroll through their books, posts, and comments. Then you see some comment you want to comment on yourself, but can you do so?Not directly. You need to figure out the URL of their comment, and then copy and paste that comment into the search bar of your Mastodon instance. Then it will show up in the same format as a Mastodon post, and you can interact with it - boost it, like it, comment on it.Sure, it works, but it's a whole lot of tedious effort.Or you can search for the user account in Mastodon and scroll through all their posts and comments as if they were a Mastodon user - and thus, you will miss out on all the unique user interface features of BookWyrm.So what is missing?Well, Mastodon already has an "Open original page" feature when looking at someone's post. What we need is an "Open original page AND AUTHENTICATE" feature. This way, the target instance (whatever software they are using) could acknowledge the viewer as an external user who could nevertheless fully interact with the local user interface, including the ability to boost, like, and make comments.This is something that should be theoretically possible to implement, right? #FediHelp

    My #HomeLab has a corrupted boot disk because of a failed rebuild of btrfs. I did the rebuild, because btrfs reported errors most likely because of power outages. I thought why not try to fix this and than it failed after days of calculating, because the USB thumb drive was ejected. Quite forcefully because of a falling broom I might add. It was a whole thing.Currently in the middle of reinstalling the boot disk. But during the wait I was thinking I probably should acquire a small #UPS for my setup. Any recommendations on what one want’s to get these days? I mainly need a small one and ideally I’d want it to communicate with the server when there is a power outage to shut it down (after an appropriate time of course).#FediHelp
