  • There is a Mastodon instance that publishes content from its own PeerTube instance. These contents are narrated aloud, likely by an AI, in several languages, and are based on articles that appear online. Today this happened with an article I shared from my blog.

The problem is that there is no attribution to the original author and or the original source site. On the contrary, it gives the impression that the content was produced directly by whoever runs that site or instance.

This is completely detached from the idea of properly sharing information. Taking inspiration is a wonderful thing. Claiming someone else’s work as your own is not.

I contacted the account in question this morning. I have not received any reply, even though other content has been published in the meantime. A short while ago I also contacted the instance administrator.

I will wait until tomorrow morning. If I do not receive a satisfactory response, I will publicly disclose the instance and the related content and block the entire domain. There are additional details that I prefer not to reveal at this time which further worsen the situation.

This is not how we act in the Fediverse.

In the Fediverse we respect one another.
Let us avoid bringing improper practices here. You are free to use my posts as you wish. You can even make money by applying my advice.
Just do not take away my attribution.

@stefano Molto interessante, sarò lieto di defederarlo se non otterrai risposta.🤔

@stefano I recall VWestlife got similarly hit with a bunch of YouTube channels a couple months ago that were mass uploading AI-generated summaries of his and other people's videos without permission (the videos themselves were just a static thumbnail image and title caption from the original video, with an AI voice reading out the AI-generated summary). He had to file copyright takedown requests to get them removed since there were no human owners to contact.

@Quinn9282 I think it may be something similar...

This was the NetBSD story, right? I saw the story too (using the same image as yours), and found it weird.

Not only unethical and AI-ick, it's copyright infringement. Every author/site of an article they've done this with has a case to complain here.

It should be able to get this account booted from its instance on this alone.

@stefano Take this kind of behaviour DOWN. We need to sink this bot trash down below the gutter!

I've seen hints of backfill working really well, but hadn't seen good examples until recently. As more and more instances upgrade to the newer versions of Mastodon that support context, backfill from Mastodon instances will improve across the board. Today one of the most popular topics on my NodeBB instance was an update from the admin of The Forkiverse, a brand new up-and-coming instance. Despite following only one person from that instance, I was able to see every single reply from that instance, even from users I don't follow. Super stoked to see resolvable contexts and backfill working in the wild. Who says the Fediverse is quiet? Not me, anymore 😅

EU is calling for comments on open source strategies. MAKE YOURSELF HEARD! Even non-EU citizens have a voice here. NOW is a time to stand up and stand out! YOU want to help the Fediverse? Here's just one way today that YOU can REALLY make a difference: The European Open Digital Ecosystem Strategy will set out: a strategic approach to the open source sector in the EU that addresses the importance of open source as a crucial contribution to EU technological sovereignty, security and competitiveness a strategic and operational framework to strengthen the use, development and reuse of open digital assets within the Commission, building on the results achieved under the 2020-2023 Commission Open Source Software Strategy. ec.europa.eu/info/law/better... #EU #open #foss #openSource #source #linux #activitypub #AP #fedi #fediverse

In PieFed v1.4 it will be possible to label posts as having AI generated content. Labelled posts will get a little badge near their title, similar to how nsfw and nsfl content is labelled. Mods and authors can change this value on a post in the same way they do flair and nsfw, using the little tags button in the bottom right or in 'More options' when editing their post. Account settings for blocking: [image: rIJ6kQKrU9ygU9p.png] Similar to how NSFW works, each user can control how those posts are listed on the home page, etc. The default is 'Label as AI', which just adds the badge. People averse to AI-generated content might want to change this to 'Hide completely'. Also similar to NSFW, entire communities can be assigned as 'AI content' and that will auto-tag every post inside as being AI generated. If the community mods have this value unset (e.g. Lemmy communities, which don't have this functionality) then the instance admin can manually override the community's AI Generated setting.
