Happy International Women's Day!
Women* (for my non-scientific polling purposes, this is everyone who does not identify as a man): how many men have mansplained to you something you're an expert on in the last 24 hours? (I just blocked a ridiculous mansplaining dude, so yeah.)
@sundogplanets where does a manplainer get their drink from?
A well, actually. -
@weta @sundogplanets well, it is a symptom mostly of my gender, so it's acceptable as a gendered term. I also like "manologue" and "corectile dysfunction"
@Offbeatmammal @weta @sundogplanets
I just say besserwisser, with the assumption that the speaker only thinks they know better, not that they actually do.
Though I do admit that know-it-all doesn't necessarily relate to interest on unprompted speaking.

@Offbeatmammal it's a sexist generalisation it's offensive in the same way as 'dumb blond' or ' nagging' or 'hysterical' for instance. describing a real behavior pattern doesn't require blaming an entire gender for it I think

@iju I like that 😂👍

I’m not eligible to reply to the poll, but in my last job I was on the Diversity and Inclusion committee, which was predominantly female. I once sat through a meeting where a (male) senior HR rep spend 15 minutes mansplaining inclusive meeting behaviour and no one was able to cut him off. So I’m quite surprised that the results so far are so low.
@david_chisnall @sundogplanets I think many women avoid generic men (I e. Non relatives, friends etc.) if they possibly can especially out of work.

@sundogplanets I'm so happy I'm no expert on anything. That's why I didn't vote.

@sundogplanets For once, it wasn't a man this time.

Thank-you!
Allow me an addendum: sometimes it's worth asking WHY someone is doing something, and not just ARE they doing it.
Besserwissering (and mansplaining, in case there's a difference) is characterized by hierarchial powerplay: keeping the stage (over more qualified) shows societal capital.
At the same time we must remember that (needless-)monologuing is also an autistic way of seeking connection. I get the impression that this is often forgotten.

@sundogplanets one….but then I only spent time with one man. (And the subject was gardening)

@iju @weta @sundogplanets as an autistic person, I am very conscious of that behavior in myself and try (usually successfully, I hope) to moderate it

Indeed. That was perhaps what I wanted to bring to the conversation. I tend to see (even on mastodon!) replies that I would characterize more as "autistic trying to be friendly", but which are categorized under mansplaining, replyguying, etc.
It's a researched fact that US citizens are the worst at working in multicultural environments. This doesn't only mean other nationalities, but also autists and other subcultures. You either mask or are inpolite.

Well this is now above my pay grade, but the points being made are brilliant and I hadn't even considered them until now, honestly

@sundogplanets Is this Women's Day, where I can simply declare myself a woman for a day and declare my needs, or Women's Day in the name of fighting for women's rights, in honor of those who have been oppressed, women's difficult experiences?

I'll add that I've repeatedly seen people with empty or non-relevant profile bios (that's to say: assumed US citizens) hassling a replying person who's profile states they have a doctorate in the topic in question.
(Which is ofc what happened to the OP.)
Itboccurs to me that are they trying to be annoying, or doing powerplays.. or upkeeping rules of conversation where academic knowledge, autistic communication etc. are seen as breaking good manners.

Happy if I could amuse you! This is a topic I find close to my heart, and it pleases me immensely to get to talk about it. Always a bit worried that someone thinks I'm trying to usurb the stage, when I see myself mostly as talking in the corner by the bathrooms..

@iju. Oh it's a common problem across the board I know. My two cents worth was just regarding the terminology itself rather than the broader dynamics you're mentioning here

I hope you weren't frustrated for getting tied in the cc-list!
Your post just acted as a muse, and I had the time to write..

@sundogplanets None, because the only men I interacted with yesterday were my husband and son, and I don't think I saw any splainy replies to posts.

Speaking purely for myself, this is why I love mastodon, this is why I come here
