@aeva nah, that's silly nonsense. In this essay I will...

@aeva
Or at least put anything beyond 500 chars under a fold. -

@aeva I like how instances have their own configurations but in the end what you get is an asymmetrical conversation.
Some people in my circles often put a huge wall of text and I only have 500 chars :)trick: just ignore them.

actually no, unlimited[1] post length, but the font size drops proportionally to message length

@aeva Linearly interpolates to the Bee Movie script after 150 characters.

I'd rather have a thing that forces them to read the last 100 posts of mine before they can reply -

This is a very good idea.
The limit on my instance is 77777 characters and that seems to be effectively unlimited, really anything >5k or so and I start thinking "maybe this should be a blog post instead".

@ekaitz_zarraga@mastodon.social @aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place As far as I know, its only #Mastodon that refuses to let people have more characters. You can just use any of the better Fediverse softwares to not have this issue. If I'm not mistaken, with #Pleroma you could potentially even limit the amount of characters from incoming messages if you really wanted to, by using an MRF. -

@aeva wait, do global character limits not also apply to replies? Or are we talking about "let me set repli[post exceeded reply character limit]

@aeva unlimited post length, but if you start scrolling past it too quickly, an animated hook drags the post off screen.

@heals I have a 500 character limit when writing any kind of post including supplies. People who are not on stock mastodon often have a much higher character limit, and some of those people do not have the ability to say anything important in under 1000 words
