#VarnishCache is rebranding to #VinylCache & is running a logo and mascot contest throughout November. Vinyl Cache will award monetary prizes to the 3 best designs:

EDIT/UPDATE: thank you for sharing insightful comments about how design competitions can be exploitative.
I've passed along your notes (and ideas for alternative approaches) to the Varnish people. I hope they'll change this contest and hire designers instead

@andycarolan thank you Andy and sorry I was not aware of this. But I still think it could be a nice opportunity for some designers... this is not a huge greedy company looking for submissions, but a small company that does really good things. I think the context is important...

@_elena I know itโs an floss project, but this is basically asking for free spec work, with the off chance of getting paid a little only if you win. Not many professionals will answer that call.
With their budget of 1500โฌ, they can hire someone working fulltime for 2โ3 days maybe. The result will be much better, itโll be an actual cooperation with proper briefing and feedback rounds, etc.
With a contest, they risk having most people just sending things they spent a couple of hours on, tops.

@nclm that's a very good point Nicolas, thank you. I will pass along this note to the Varnish people

@_elena Really they could either:
โ Go the proper way, make a call for offers, receive portfolios/quotes and choose one designer to collaborate with.
โ Go the open source way if they prefer, have people offering logos/mascots, all online, with public votes, etc.
But the midway, asking for people to do the entire work and send it to them privately for them to choose, itโs making people work for free, not an open source contribution. They wouldnโt do that for pull requests or other dev tasks?

@_elena @andycarolan It's not a nice opportunity, it's exploitation.
No matter how much you personally like the software, this is shady as fuck and they've lost all my respect.

@_elena And if they really want to see several directions by several people (a luxury that most design clients donโt get really), they could use the budget they have for the second and third prizes to hire 2โ3 people to create sketches/concepts before choosing one and pay them the first prize budget. But at least everyone gets hired fairly :)

@woe2you @andycarolan in all fairness maybe they are not aware of this because they are technical people who don't know designers. I will make sure to pass on your notes and feedback. TBF even I didn't know about this (and I'm a photographer / filmmaker)

@_elena @elena Varnish Software is a VC funded corporation with ~84.5M SEK annual turnover.
They can afford to hire a designer and pay them properly like they do everyone else who works for them.

@_elena Thanks Elena, oh yes, I'm 100% sure that it was well intentioned. It's totally impossible for us all to be aware of sentiment and practices within each other's industries. I'm sure I've taken missteps on occasion lol.
Thanks for the discourse, and I hope that VinylCache find what they are looking for :)
Wishing you a great day!

@andycarolan @woe2you thank you Andy! I've edited the post, updating it with the general sentiment... and I've also passed along your feedback - along with other great suggestions for alternative approaches - to the Varnish people.
Safe to say I will NEVER AGAIN look at design competitions the same way. Thank you for enlightening me about this - and for offering me grace ๐ฅฒ
