"I often feel that being a community mod or a community leader should not be seen as power but a responsibility. You have a duty of care to ensure the safety of your members who choose to let you have some power over a part of their lives.
I don't think some of the admins of the larger instances get this. I think some admins are salivating more over getting the celebs over, rather than caring for their existing community.

Not 24 hours after the admin of mas.to wrung his hands about Nazis in his bar, there was another one.
That one was replying to the visible activists on our community and posting death threat memes, using racist language and Eugenics.
There is no ironic posting of the Nazi flag or usage of Nazi dog whistles.
I've reported and blocked but the only way to stop it is close the open signups.
Stop performatively wringing your hands. It does nothing to stop the wave.

@onepict Absolutely. One of those jobs where you should be nominating people rather than taking volunteers because those who want it are exactly those who shouldn't get it.
Open registrations must mean 24 hour moderation. Can't leave 'em open and go to bed or even to lunch, gotta be on the ball immediately.

@pre There are folks who are suspicious of mastodon.art, but I think the way that the instance has a policy of putting cash towards moderators is a good model.
It's also not a bad thing to build an alliance with other instances and build up experience and share backgrounds.
I'm also a fan of invite only to curate community. I think some of the scalers like to argue about "how do we get folks on the fediverse?"
To that I say, start with your offline community.

@onepict If you can moderate effectively enough to ban nazis within minutes then you can approve accounts within minutes.
If you can't approve in minutes then you don't have the moderation staff to allow open registrations.
