"This is not a bouquet. This is survival.
American pikas are the ultimate alpine hoarders. In summer, these small, potato-shaped relatives of rabbits gather wildflowers and grasses into “haystacks." Later, when winter buries their rocky homes under deep snow, they’ll feast on their stashed bouquets.
#Pikas don’t hibernate, so their summer grocery shopping is literally a matter of life or death. They’ll spend months racing the clock, gathering lots and lots of haystacks.
So the next time you see a pika running around with a mouthful of flowers, know they’re not just being adorable. They’re stocking up for the long haul."
