@aeva yeah, with the exception of the anti-cheat games (PUBG being the only one that I have any interest in), I haven't run into much trouble running anything. Games from the Epic Games Store have given me the most trouble, and that's mostly down to having to use Heroic Launcher to get around DRM stuff, and there being some quirks to getting that to work 100% right.

@DKesserich i feel a 1-in-10 chance of a game not working at all is representative of my experience playing random games with proton, as is the greater-than-50% chance of a game working perfectly on the first try. wine has come a very long ways in the 20+ years i've been using it, and that is very exciting to me. it is also true that it is not perfect and games with anti-cheat snake oil do not make up 10% of all windows-only steam games.

@DKesserich it requires neither excuse or apology. wine is one of the very few long game projects in the Linux ecosystem that I actually have any faith in ever being perfect some day despite the fact that I have been using it for 20+ years

It's been a long day. Tomorrow though, I really need this MikroTik CCR2004-1G-2XS-PCIe, running the home router, to be quiet. Therefore, lay in bed, figure out which Thermal Grizzly conductive pad is most appropriate for replacement between the NIC's heatsink.. and maybe there a STL file for making a carbon fitment plus copper core (taken from an old Broadwell system, heatsink with a couple of blah blah blah... yep. Go to sleep brain, stop this, maybe more tomorrow.
So GPT-Pro and Deep Research... tell me what to buy.

@genehack I'm pretty averse to using from-source builds of stuff. I mean, I build a lot of software all the time, as it's my job to package a shitload of software...a bunch of Python, Nodejs, C and C++ code. But, I like the deployment (even on my own machines) to be a package, so I can keep up with it. So, if I'm building third-party stuff from source it means I'm pretty pissed off about the package situation. I ended up finding an RPM in the RPMFusion nonfree repo while building, though.

Vacationed with family for my birthday! Not sure I got a single Art Thing done all week. Just a lot of Tourist Things, and a lot of extra sleep in between walking around all the Tourist Things.

@aeva God, Gnome Clocks is so painful. I know Gnome as a whole has a reputation of "what if we brought bad phone UI to computer?" but Gnome Clocks is so out of the "Gnome UI Overton Window" that I'd imagine even the most staunch Gnomers would look at it with disappointment. Not even the worst Android clock apps are that bad.
I'm on KDE at home and their clock app is just... So good. It's no TimeR Machine but it allows multiple simultaneous timers, alarms, the whole shebang with nice clean UI.
