rimu@piefed.social for what it's worth, we had this discussion a decade ago too. We ended up being very simplistic and not tying anything to anything else. So posts are not tied to topics (theoretically you could have a post in multiple topics... we don't do that, but you can) And topics aren't tied to categories (same deal, and we also don't have topics in multiple categories... yet!!, cross-posting will change that. So when you have a direct url to a post it's just /post/. A friendly URL uses a post index, but we can do that because we order posts linearly. Piefed doesn't have that advantage unfortunately.

@julian no, mastodon doesn't use salmon anymore, not since a long time ago. they switched to websub then activitypub direct delivery.on the indieweb side, salmention is an extension to webmention, where upon receiving a webmention where someone replied to you, you add that reply to your html then send a webmention up the reply chain to whoever you replied to, and they will fetch your html and find the new downstream reply, add it to *their* html, send a webmention upstream, and so on.

At Piefed office hours, rimu@piefed.social and I got to talking about what's next for Piefed and the Threadiverse WG. One of those things is moving stuff between communities (or in bbs parlance: moving topics between categories/forums). Rimu suggested we use the already-existing as:Move activity, sent by the community (a group actor), with origin and target set, and with object being the post id itself. I suggested we update this to use the resolvable context collection as object instead, which Piefed has supported since v1.2. That should be enough to get a proof-of-concept implementation going between Piefed and NodeBB... a question remained as to whether this should be Announce(Move(Object)) or simply Move(Object). Argument for former was that it was similar verbiage to other 1b12 actions. Argument for the latter was that this is merely 1b12 adjacent and needn't follow prior art. We'll likely put together an FEP for this.

Another tricky aspect of this is different clients have all kinds of different designs and colors so depending on the situation the tags could look garish and crazy. But on the other hand a bit of crazy is fun.
