I'm listening to the Search Engine episode that birthed the #forkiverse, and I have questions.
-
I don't want to blow the potential issues out of proportion. All new instances face unexpected challenges, particularly if their admins are also finding their way around the fediverse. Though I really do think the longevity question is the most critical from the perspective of the health of the fediverse. The forkiverse has brought 2k new people onto the network, and it would be a shame to lose them just because the operators or their employer decided that the experiment was no longer worth funding.
Excellent questions that @caseynewton should probably answer.
Certainly drives to the heart of one's Fedizen responsibilities.

@mastodonmigration "what is your plan for funding this project in perpetuity" is the exact sort of wet-blanket energy that discourages people from building on the Fediverse! Let’s let people run experiments and try to have some fun

Fair enough. Asked and answered.
So, the #Forkiverse is kind of like a "pop-up" instance. Interesting premise.

@caseynewton @mastodonmigration Which is fine, if everyone involved in your experiment knows that it's an experiment and that it might not be around forever. If they don't, it's another matter.
Looking at https://theforkiverse.com/about , which is where people who want to create an account will go, there's no indication that this is 'running an experiment' and that their new home on the fedi might not be around forever.
It was a genuine question by someone who's been on the fediverse -

@caseynewton @mastodonmigration - long enough to see instances that had been around for years suddenly vanish when their admins ran out of money, or didn't have the time or capacity to run the instance any more.
You could have just answered the question, but you chose to be a dick, which I guess says enough :)

@caseynewton @mastodonmigration Speaking as someone who's experienced a stovetop pan fire... wet blanket energy is good actually, in certain circumstances... burning vegetable oil in your kitchen is not sustainable in the medium term

@welshpixie yeah i'm the one being the dick here for sure

@caseynewton You're shaming people for asking with good reason about whether there are any longevity plans.
If the answer is 'no', that's fine! As long as everyone involved knows that. It's not a trick question and it's not meant to discourage you, or anyone, from experimenting.
Responding to that question by having a little strop is a very clear indication that you're just like every other privileged white guy techbro in that you don't want to have to think about consequences.

@welshpixie you are an absolute parody of the median Mastodon account and the reason the Fediverse is generally perceived to be a joyless hellscape

Casey, you decided to be an asshole about reasonable questions, politely stated. Don’t resort to crude stereotypes.

Anyway, since I am, for some reason 🧐, no longer feeling particularly generous about it, I'll point out that there are literally thousands of experienced admins, as well as some highly credentialed tech researchers, they could have talked to about the process of setting up a fediverse server, which seems like a pretty basic way to go about journalism, and instead they asked Claude AI how to do it.
