@com @chirpbirb @jwz there's iOS 18.7.3 for iPhones capable of running iOS 26, but it's only available when enabling "Beta updates for iOS 18".
@dchest @chirpbirb @jwz That trick is dead. The beta channel no longer offers 18.7.3 for iPhones.

My iPad is currently begging me to allow it to upgrade itself from 18 to 26. How much would I regret it if I said yes?
https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz I haven’t used it much on an iPad, but I’ve had it on my phone for a while and it’s mostly fine, I guess. The UI visuals are annoying (to me), and sometimes harder for me to read, but everything seems to work the same way.

This blogpost makes an astoundingly good case about LLMs I hadn't considered before. The collapse of public forums (like Stack Overflow) for programming answers coincides directly with the rise of programmers asking for answers from chatbots *directly*. Those debugging sessions become part of a training set that now *only private LLM corporations have access to*. @lritter in this case it was a bad decision made under pressure that I had already refactored out a year prior, I just missed a spot. i like to think i've been able to code most programmers under the table for quite a long time now, but that's not really all that hard a bar to clear tbh.

@aeva the most salient moments of this are a few years in the past for me. you *do* get better. most things i find now are code that hasn't been "garbage collected"
