I’m not a football fan, but I have to hand it to the Super Bowl for its forthcoming role in educating millions of Americans about the fact that Puerto Ricans are, actually, US citizens.

For the record: People born in Puerto Rico are US citizens by birthright, just like people born in, say, Indiana. They can hold US passports. They're Americans.
*Residents* of Puerto Rico, which is not a US state, have no representation in the House or Senate (just like residents of the District of Columbia), and do not vote in presidential elections. But because they are US citizens, they are free to establish residency in any state they wish, and vote in elections there, whenever they wish.

@mattblaze I suppose that my objection was that even though you say that "Puerto Ricans are, actually, US citizens," they're actually treated as less than that. That's self-explanatory, I think.

@nihongomaamaa Citizenship is a specific, precise legal concept. It its distinct from residence and nationality.

@mattblaze I don't want to know about your specific, precise legal conception. I want to know about actual discrimination and how to counter it.

@mattblaze are you saying that I shouldn't be interested in Puerto Rican rights?

@mattblaze you were the one that brought them up.

@nihongomaamaa Yes, that's how this thing works. People post about topics that are of interest to them. No guarantees are provided to readers.
