Here's my first Mastodon post!

@hpod16 Well, everything I did over at Twitter: sharing news, writing about my day, my thoughts, my hobbies, posting photos, linking blog articles from my blog and maintaining loose contact to other friendly people here. So nothing special 😊
@Bastianoso gosh, Twitter back in the day was such a cool place to be! I joined in 2011 and fell in love. (enough so that I made social media my career for the past 10 years)
-
Wholeheartedly seconding the recommendation of FediTips, i..e bullets 3-6 of the QUICK START on the landing page!
It's a guide for "how to ...", "what is ...", "where do I find ..." questions, but if you're looking for content recommendations, you need to be your own algorithm. 🌞
If you're into things like hashtag games, musical hashtag games, motto photography and similar, it's here too, but not "on the nose" to find, so just ask.
Enjoy!

@Bastianoso I'm still pretty salty about what happened to it.
It's an awful place now. -
Here's my first Mastodon post!
My mission out here? To understand and promote Mastodon, the only large European social media platform (to my knowledge).
How can we make more Europeans come to the Fediverse?@hpod16
Herzlich Willkommen im
Welcome! -
it's usually called "moderation" online, but IMO it's like parties!
You welcome new people, you have a sense of both the agreed beliefs and the issues that are going to be touchy for your group, you do ongoing organization so people can find the good stuff...
and sometimes you have to throw somebody out though in a good system that's RARE and it always involves some people feeling it was too early and some people feeling it wasn't early enough.
Familiar???
@hpod16 (that's the human side. There's a whole computer side that's technical, and then complicated stuff when human and technical decisions affect each other. But these don't have to be done by the same people, though they have to be able to talk to each other)

Imagine I'm preparing a workshop for people who want to understand and join Mastodon.
What could you tell people to make Mastodon look like a fun place to be?@hpod16 @midzer

What could you tell people to make Mastodon look like a fun place to be?Wide: Goofy hashtags! I'm personally fond of LichenSubscribe and Defaidodon , but there are people here doing ... anything.
Narrow: it's nice being on a server with an interest and seeing what fellow interests come up with. I'm on an intellectual-interest server, but considering getting a second account on a geographic-place server for my home city, just to separate work and home a bit.

@sparfindig
On EU politicians: the first European Commissioner Henna Virkkunen just joined last week.
@HennaVirkkunen
She was set up with an account on the official EC instance, so people know it's really her.
But I'll promote it amongst other politicians when I meet them too!@hpod16 @sparfindig @HennaVirkkunen
I'd like to add the #FediFirst-Strategy for Commissioners and Institutions:
whenever you use social media to release a statement, use your Fediverse-Account first and only post it on #BigTech-Platforms a bit later (like 15 or 60 minutes).
Every newspaper that wants to be the first one has to use and therefore name the fediverse as the go-to-source instead of X or Instagram. It is their choice which platform they want to support with their public visibility

@hpod16 Yeah, back in the days I received mentions via SMS on my not so smart phone. What a time!
But today it’s just harm, no use. -

The time of "You have to be on X/... to be heard" is over. You have no control over the algorithm that chooses which post will be preferred in what persons timeline. The algorithm does control you. Here it is different: there is no algorithm. It is just us. The people. We choose if we want to boost your post or not.
Which means: in the #Fediverse you have to speek to the people again - not someone elsea algorithm.

How about European services that mainly/exclusively utilise Mastodon for sharing their latest whatever it is they do?

@hpod16 About the federation aspect: "Life is awesome and full of choices. Choosing an instance for your account is fun, too. We did this for e-mail in the past. You have the freedom, you decide."
@midzer @hpod16 i usually do a small comparison on how different platforms work in normal use case vs. in extreme use case.
ppl "usually" understand how to use mastodon in a normal way (as if it's similar to twitter or whatever)
the extreme use case as being when bad things happen to a walled-garden platform. its users "may" realize they actually don't have the freedom to choose a different instance without losing communication to their connections (followers & following)
