Yes!
We always sample the baked plain cut out stars, hearts or circles left over when there isn't enough dough left to reshape more. Without filling, they are still buttery short cookies.
Raspberry is my favorite filling, but elderberry jam or apricot are lovely too.
We included ground hazelnuts in the dough for flavor. The sweetness comes from the powdered sugar sprinkled on the top layer before assembly. -

I'm typically not much of a caramel fan but I sampled the filling and it's quite nice
