    For my fifth wedding anniversary, my wife bought me a Treehut watch and engraved it with a personalized message. The watch band is in fairly bad shape (especially after wearing it day-in day-out in Hawaii for most of a month) and the strap itself is incompatible with anything but itself (boo on them). Anyhow I looked into it and found a Reddit thread with these watch afficionados absolutely ripping the shit out of the watch. Calling it trash, $10 quartz, etc. But you know what? I own a couple watches... including a decent looking Fossil, and a Timex weekender (the watch to buy first, according to said watch afficionados), and you know what watch gets me the most compliments, by far? (Like 10+ vs 0 for the rest.) The treehut "$10 quartz" watch. Just funny to think about. Perceived social value vs. demonstrable social value.

    A Simple $25 Robot Based on the ESP32[Paul McCabe] wrote in to let us know about his $25 robot. This small wheeled robot is based on an ESP32 and made using cardboard and hot glue.You drive the contraption using a Bluetooth game controller thanks to the Bluepad32 library, which boasts a long list of supported hardware. [Paul] provides a Bill of Materials (BoM), complete with current component pricing. We don’t know about you, but it struck us as funny that the microcontroller is less expensive than the battery! Ah, the times we live in. Also [Paul] assumes you already have an appropriate Bluetooth controller and doesn’t include that in the total cost.The software and related material is available on GitHub: github.com/paulemccabe1/DirtCheapRobot.
