Baby’s First Synth was Daddy’s First Project
We absolutely adore inspired labor-of-love tales such as this one. [Alastair] wanted to build a synth for his daughter’s third birthday in spite of having no prior hardware knowledge. It became the perfect excuse to learn about CAD, microcontrollers, PCB design, and of course, 3D printing.
So, why a synth for a toddler? Aside from plain old ‘why not?’, the story goes that she received a Montessori busy-type board which she seemed to enjoy, and it reminded [Alastair] of the control surface of a synth. He wondered how hard it could be to build something similar that made sound and didn’t require constant button presses.
[Alastair] began his journey by dusting off a 15-year-old Arduino Inventors Kit. The initial goal was to get potentiometer readings and map them to 12 discrete values, and then emit MIDI messages. This was easy enough, and it was time to move to a synth module and an Elegoo Nano.

Beh, lo sto leggendo (per una recensione da pubblicare su Media INAF) ed è fantastico.
Ho dovuto superare qualche resistenza, elaborare qualche perplessità. L'idea di raccontare le cose più bizzarre del nostro cosmo rinunciando non solo alle formule matematiche, ma alle consuete spiegazioni a parole, analogie eccetera, non mi aveva subito convinto.
Per giunta, Kip (premio Nobel) sceglie di esprimersi in versi liberi, e immerge le sue parole nelle illustrazioni a grande formato di Lia. E c'è tutta una storia che ha per protagonista la moglie di Lia, Felicia, alle prese con buchi neri e wormhole e tutto il resto.
Pensavo fosse un esperimento velleitario.
E invece funziona.
Le parole sono quelle giuste, le illustrazioni sono magnifiche. Il viaggio nel cosmo di Felicia diventa il nostro, diventa un modo per umanizzare oggetti esotici facendoli entrare in rapporto con un corpo, con i nostri corpi. Sentendo, non spiegando.
Capisco perché ci abbiano messo (dicono) tredici anni.
Io azzardo, leggendo: ne valeva la pena.
