A teenager asked me for recommendations to get into science fiction. I know she reads fantasy, but I guess they are different genres to her.
She said someone told her she should read Dune, and I said nooooo, you should not read Dune. I suggested Murderbot. What else should I recommend?

@boxofdelights If she is reading fantasy, a really interesting bridge to science fiction might be A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge. It's a big book with big concepts, but deep inside is actually a medieval society of dog-like creatures that involuntarily interact with a galaxy-spanning society.

@boxofdelights Sticking with mostly "newer" stuff
NK Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy sort of straddles the fantasy/sf line and she might enjoy it.
For pure sf that isn't set in space and more biology oriented: Peter Watts' Starfish (I somehow never read the second and third in the trilogy so can't vouch for those)
I've read some of The Expanse (maybe the first five books?), they are good, but there are a lot of characters to keep track of and I got a bit burnt out by it all
Nicola Griffith's Ammonite is another that isn't set in space and more biology oriented

I think I started with Ray Bradbury. Sort of bridges the two.Also William Gibson.

@boxofdelights agreed on Dune, which has become outdated to no mean degree (barring the Butlerian jihad).
Perhaps the deeply dystopian and occasionally trippy Neuromancer and subsequent novels? Got a bit of the sex stuff in so I'm not sure how shielded said teen should be, and protagonist is man but costar is badass woman.
Theoretically, Asimov is interesting, but like Herbert hasn't really stood the test of time and gotten outdated.

@Gargron In addition a lot of anglophone people speak only one language, so they've never been able to compare the translation of a book between two languages they speak.

I feel pretty dumb telling this to the master, but translating a literary work is much more than changing one word for another. Even it you keep all the meaning, it gets weird and doesn't flow; each language has its own rhythm and cadence. A good translator frequently has to completely rewrite a paragraph to keep the sense, the emotions and the flow of the story. Even worse, he needs to make it faithful to the original, which having intermediate versions can make harder.
I'm not a professional translator, but I have tried to translate some public domain stories, and found that automatic translation is a hindrance. I had to rewrite nearly all, looking always to the original version. It was too easy to drift far from it and get the text and the author absolutely distorted.
It is a work of art and love, not something a machine can do at all. Not even a part of it.

on the plus side, machine translation illuminated me as to the involvement of the presbyterian church in the famous movie "backstroke of the west"

@Gargron I am an anglophone, but read in French from time to time. I tend to have a machine translator nearby to augment my poor vocabulary. Last book I read it told me nineteenth century Breton people had horses hoofs on their feet. The actual translation should have been clogs.
This stuff is constant, that's just one I remember
