@Nux It's the EuroBSDConAdvent calendar, so 5 days to EuroBSDCon 🙂
Zimbra is still Open Source, they just don't provide the builds anymore - but you can build it yourself.
Carbonio is another software - a Zimbra fork. -

Re Zimbra, I think it lost a lot of credibility when exchanging so many hands. My gut prefers Zextras atm.

@Nux I agree, all those ownership changes didn't look good at all. More, they seem more oriented towards providing software and services to "the big cloud players" so they're not focused on self-hosting anymore. And it's a shame.
About Zextras - I've very good reasons to avoid dealing with them. This could be one of the future horror stories on my blog... -

@drheho This article just covers the basics - of course, the server should be hardened, both at firewall level (limiting the requests, connections, etc.) and using solutions like fail2ban. But I didn't want to go too deep.

django@social.coop yes, that could be one use case, but what I want to stress is that a topic belonging to a category should stay in that category.
For example, if a topic "PieFed is great" is started on fediverse@piefed.social, it wouldn't be right (nor would I really be able to) move that topic to fediverse@lemmy.world — I don't own either of them!
So to de-duplicate topics or move them around based on my personal liking is possible, but goes against the reality that a specific topic is a member of a specific community.
It's more a restriction out of principle than anything.
Now, if one were to put together a proper cross-posting FEP and it were adopted by the threadiverse implementors, then we'd really be cookin'.

@misty it would still be better than a total loss, but still catastrophically incomplete.
I can envision this being fixable with some kind of “object move” that servers recognize so that they can edit the in-reply-to etc to keep threads intact, even though plain URLs inside would still be broken.
Or maybe we need some other kind of “global derefernceable IDs” for the objects? Do the FEPs for nomadic identities support something like that?
