Fallout from a ballistic missile seems quite an act of war and I doubt "hey there was no war declaration" is enough to get a payment from them.@mbpaz @DaveFlater @0xabad1dea I'd be genuinely curious to know how that will work. Ballistic missiles are definitely nation-state coded in ways that truck bombs are not; but my understanding is that insurance contracts usually distinguish between 'war' other violent damage by legal status rather than delivery method.
I also think I've been told that the "Malayan Emergency" was so classified in order to try to avoid war-related insurance conditions, so it has been tried before.

@0xabad1dea Fun, but do we actually know that the missile hit the data centre? A missile might have hit a neighbouring building, and the explosion then caused some large bits of concrete or whatever to hit the data centre.

Datacenters aren't usually built right next to other buildings (except other datacenters). I would more assume that it was literal debris from a fully- or partially-successful intercept. UAE does have Patriot missile batteries and the debris from an intercept has to go somewhere (and I'd assume that an actual/direct missile- or drone-strike would come with a different, more-significant status). -

Which is weird, because UAE would seem more like "Middle East East" or at least "mec-2" (since I'd assume the first AZ in "central" would be someplace more central to the region like, say, Riyadh). -

However, my argument for “socialization” stems from the belief that LLMs are a significant productive force. If we view them as “asbestos,” the logical step is a total ban. But if we see them as a “utility” (like electricity), the current corporate monopoly is the real poison.
In a historical materialism framework, the “toxic” side effects we see today—like reckless resource consumption or data exploitation—are often driven by the capitalist mode of production (profit-first scaling). By “liberating” or socializing the material basis of AI, we gain the democratic power to regulate its use and minimize those downsides, turning it into a true public good rather than a corporate hazard.

maybe #LLMs are the X-ray of IT.
In the early days used like candy. (Kids got their feet x-rayed in stores on open appliances, so the parents could see if the shoes fit. No kidding)
As experience grew, use was regulated and cut down increasingly. But it's still used to this day. For narrow usecases. Applied carefully.Admittedly I doubt LLMs are as useful as #Xray. I think it's rather the #asbestos (which made wonderful things of concrete possible but mostly wasn't worth the downsides).
