    #3GoodThings

🚞 yesterday on the train to Karlsruhe, Germany I befriended a young man who works in the cafeteria. Just saying “hi, how are you?” made his whole face beam. When I ordered a double espresso, the coffee overflowed… so he made me a new cup. I ended up offering to pay for both cups (because I need plenty of coffee in the morning and throwing away coffee is sacrilegious to me) and he gave me lots of complementary cookies. My daughter loved them.

🐶 last night we had dinner in the charming town of Ettlingen. My daughter was drawn to a Jack Terrier whose owner was sitting with a friend outside our restaurant. The owner was super friendly and told us my daughter could come out see the dog anytime. So during our meal we popped out to see the dog at least 5 times. My daughter kept petting the dog and hugging him. The owner said he was really touched and that in 13 years of having his dog he had never seen a child be so affectionate towards his dog. He said he got goosebumps and that she’s a really special child… which almost made me tear up.

🎧 my Fedi promo video was mentioned in @cubicgarden’s podcast… in a fascinating experiment, trying to explain the Fediverse to someone not familiar with it.

@lritter @halcy the problem with euclidean coordinates is while they are mathematically convenient and very logical in isolation, they don't actually seem to occur in nature at all

@halcy i've got a feeling that this is what a self taught programmer feels when they try to work out how to sort stuff faster and everything they find is either programmers telling eachother to just use a library or academic formalist nonsense

@aeva @halcy i'd stick to euclidean coordinates. if you must center, use the sun ffs.

@halcy the real problem here is that academic astronomy best practice is to tie everything into spherical coordinates on the firmament so they can factor out the earth enough that you can pretend it is a fixed vantage point that doesn't spin, and if god forbid you do need to tie an observation to geographic coordinates for some reason i guess you just burn an undergrad on it and not sully yourself with the indignity
