While talking to a colleague about how I recently learned most people have never sat on a cow it came up that she has never sat on a horse. Like, not even once during childhood.
Another colleague admitted they also have never sat on a horse.
My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on a horse.

@Pepijn Remember those (now ghastly) ponies at the various fairs went round and round? That was my first "horse" experience a long, long time ago.

@Pepijn I've never done that as far as I know. But all my children got the possibility and used it at least once. I guess i even won't do it either, I'm not interested in horses, dogs or cats, sometimes i doubt the concept of modern pets.

@Pepijn yes. My dad is friends with a rancher who competes in cutting, and weβd make the drive out to visit him once every few years. The first time, they didnβt give me a saddle, just told me to hold on, and they walked the horse on the rope. I slipped around the side. Iβve watched him and his sons compete, though. I think the last time I was there, they were hosting a rodeo.
Also, that one time at Girl Scouts.

@robynredbreast @diazona we still have Arabbers selling fresh produce out of horse-drawn carts here in #Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Weβre not that far away from the time when horses were a major mode of transportation.

@Pepijn it depends on where people grew up and when. Many people who've grown up in cities haven't been to areas with horse riding. Unless they're rich enough for holidays with horse riding included this won't factor into their lives.
@Kay Scouting and possibly other summer camps might offer such a thing. I got to attend a Girl Scout camp that was specifically horse-focused. We weren't rich by any stretch.
Also, I grew up in Houston TX, but there are plenty of rural areas in and around it where people have horses. I even owned one for a little while.

note: the question is not "have your rich parents paid 50.000 of your local currency on gloriously expensive horse lessons and then you went on a skiing holiday". The question is: "have you sat on a horse".

Cow = not horse, wrong thread.
And yes, as many people point out: that school-trip to an inner-city petting school where all six yr olds sat on Alfiiiii!! the sturdy mini-horse = yes, I've sat on a horse.

I've also sat on a chicken but that was an accident and neither of us enjoyed it.

@Pepijn @napalousa Seeing a lot more strong feelings on this than the cow poll. I too have sat on a horse and hated the experience. The horse running away and throwing me at a metal gate has something to do with it.

To be fair, it where Belgium Horses, big massive buff ones so not really riding horses

@Pepijn I rode a horse once as part of a scout camp thing, and once or twice when I was very young.
I do routinely use my dog as a pillow, not sure if that counts. (He's not quite big enough to ride, even though he is bigger than me.)
