While talking to a colleague about how I recently learned most people have never sat on a cow it came up that she has never sat on a horse. Like, not even once during childhood.
Another colleague admitted they also have never sat on a horse.
My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on a horse.

@Pepijn I once had to wrestle a cow. TBF it was still a baby cow, but yeah. Somehow the little fucker got through the fence and didn't want to go back in the pen.
Now seeing a farmer running tackle a (different) calf that managed to run through the electric fence somehow was downright terrifying... (It hit the fence, got tangled in it, then untangled on the other side within the span of ~3 seconds, "mostly unharmed" at the end of the ordeal)

@Pepijn I had nothing but horses on my mind when I was growing up. Started vaulting when I was 7 and riding about two years later. I earned it by helping in the stable and with the smol kids vaulting lessons. Stopped when I was 18.
I guess it depends on where you grew up if you even regularly see horses... The swiss government payed farmers for breeding and keeping military horses. In the 90s it was pretty common for farmers to have some horses for that purpose.

@Pepijn The first time I rode a horse (a pony) was when I was about 7, on an uncleโs farm. An older brother and I decided we were going to ride him, so we somehow managed to get onto him together (no idea anymore how) and the first thing the pony did was run straight under a low hanging tree branch. From getting on to hitting the ground took about 3 seconds. My uncle enjoyed a good laugh.

@Pepijn Not sure about the cow. I used to have a friend who casually rode his favourite cow but I don't think he ever let me ride. I probably did *sit* on her though, statically. The cow's name was Joris.

@Pepijn during a trip to Jamaica, we rode horseback thru the ocean and on land.
Was just a kid and was given like zero instruction lol. I made it. If I didn't move my leg fast enough once I would've smacked it on a fence. -

@Pepijn I remember the "Have you sat on a cow" query, and I thought it strange that an opportunity like that would come up. But, a horse or a pony, or a donkey or a burro: most people have sat on one of them at least once, even if they didn't ride them in anything but a circle. I find donkeys much nicer than horses.

@Pepijn it depends on where people grew up and when. Many people who've grown up in cities haven't been to areas with horse riding. Unless they're rich enough for holidays with horse riding included this won't factor into their lives.

@Pepijn I think so? It might have only been a pony? Unsure. I was and am still very small, so they all seemed just massive creatures.

@Pepijn I grew up with neighbors who had horses, so I rode them quite a lot (mostly the nice girl Dusty, not her sorta asshole stallion Smoke; on a good day he'd let a boy on but he was unimpressed).
I do live rural but not enough to really justify a horse of my own.
How are city people ever gonna see a horse? With cops?

My mom used to do riding and sometimes I came too and got to ride. Its really fun but kinda scary

note: the question is not "have your rich parents paid 50.000 of your local currency on gloriously expensive horse lessons and then you went on a skiing holiday". The question is: "have you sat on a horse".

And yes, as many people point out: that school-trip to an inner-city petting school where all six yr olds sat on Alfiiiii!! the sturdy mini-horse = yes, I've sat on a horse.
