Scientists generally want you to know, the people that finance their work on the other hand? It depends on how marketable is the discovery
@csolisr I've never personally experienced or even remotely heard of a funder trying to influence the results of a study (and been a scientist for about 15 years now). I'm sure it can happen but it will be a negligible minority.

@jascha they want you to know so bad, they've devised a whole elaborate system around publishing their research.
They're holding regular conferences and publish everything that's been presented there as "proceedings".
They _teach_ at public institutions to make sure more people know each year.
They want you to know! That's literally their job

@jascha I can confirm this - my brother is a biochemist and he has one research project he was on that he still tells people about at bus stops.

@knowprose I believe it's a systemic vs individual issue thing. Systemic bias is not intentional, but also harder to spot than individual prejudice. Like how me and many other women who consider themselves modern feminists still perpetuate(d) a "deal with it" attitude regarding period pain, which discourages those with very painful cysts and endometriosis from seeking diagnosis. Not intentional, but we need to do better

@diazona @dougiec3 @jascha Not just cancer either. It’s kind of a general things. Yes it’s tongue in cheek :) But it’s why there’s phases etc. I don’t think most are aware of how medical research works, they just see the (BS) headlines.
(I don’t have the know how to understand medical research etc. Just know a bit about parts of the process as a guinea pig.)

@jascha TBH, I've never heard the phrase "Scientists do not want you to know" spoken or written before today.
Joys of picking and choosing my life in a sane community/city/state/family.@joemug @jascha it's a big thing on most social media/youtube. Make some extreme claim of some miracle product that "scientists have been hiding" to sell some snakeoil through an affiliate link or personal store, or just completely made up for the views and ad revenue.
You can also replace scientist with "gardener", "mechanic" whatever and see much the same, and the related "I stopped going to the store/etc and do X instead" tagline.

They use that line as clickbait, but it doesn't work on anyone who has the slightest clue about science and scientists.

Part of it is the *promises* we were made of what life with AI was going to be like.
Liz highlights UBI as necessary here, and it's actually correct FROM THEIR ARGUMENTS. All the big CEOs of tech were talking up UBI as the answer to what would happen when AI automated everything. So we should hold them to account.
(They also said we'd be automating away the tedious stuff so we can focus on creative things like writing, code, artwork, and music. Oops! Funny how that worked out, huh?)
