@evan I knew someone who tried to emigrate from the US to #Canada about ten years ago. He was older, though not retired: he had a part-time job at a CA university. He bought a house in a lovely little town. But he found he couldn't get healthcare at any price: there's no way to buy in to the Canadian system, but healthcare providers in Canada don't offer a cash option either. He had to drive back to the US for every doctor visit. After a few years of that, he gave up and returned to the US.

@akkana I don't think this is right; you should check with your friend. It varies by province, but immigrants with long term work visas (like 6 months or more) always have access to public health coverage. Some provinces have a waiting period, but that's usually on the order of a month or two. Even if you're not covered, your employer is supposed to get you specialised private insurance for this purpose.
