Is there a way to set recurring tasks (daily, every Wednesday etc) in #NextCloud tasks?

The first type is the one that tends to get celebrated, awarded and rewarded, the second type are necessary for everyone to stay healthy and everything to keep ticking over, to create an environment in which the first type that impresses everyone can happen. At home we call these housework or care work, in a professional context we call them routine maintenance or "glue"

Since I’m (slowly) moving away from Apple products, and we currently use Apple’s calendar to track household glue (and other appointments), I’ve been looking at tools for moving events from remind to an iCal format calendar using rem2ics so my sweetie can keep using the calendar app on her phone, even if I switch the underlying household calendar.

If you build a task manager without the facility to do recurring tasks that tells me a) you're not the one doing the recurring maintenance tasks and b) you either don't recognise the importance of maintenance tasks or you haven't even noticed that they're being done around you to allow you to do the big one off production of a European open source task manager, say.
Come on, it's 2026. Do better men. And it is mostly men.
Oh and before anyone says "Oh but women are good at recurring maintenance tasks because they're naturally good at multitasking": 1) saying this will earn you a block. 2) No, we're not, we had to learn to be. That's why I need a task manager to tell me to keep on top of things like that. @afewbugs @gumnos I’m planning to publish the source for the shop calendar, but first I need to get a web-server up and running, and I’m hoping to have iocaine running on it to keep AI scrapers at bay, as a preliminary experiment used a ton of bandwidth in a day of putting some (Markov-chain-babbly) source-code on a publicly accessible server. https://iocaine.madhouse-project.org/
So, a fairly typical yak-shaving expedition has ensued, because I would still like to have nice things.

@afewbugs Great thread. I think sometimes about how many thousands of lives are saved every day by the cleaning staff at hospitals, but they never get recognition for it, since Preventing a Terrible Thing isn’t nearly as exciting as Fixing Terrible Thing (that maybe could have been prevented)

Ah, replied to a post which was removed before I could press reply. Anyway, here's the comment:
I think, to some degree and in a work environment, it's also because maintenance tasks and day to day operations stuff is not typically valued in an organization. Some people - and they're often men - don't do work which won't get them recognition from higher-ups.
I say this as someone who prefers to do maintenance work and operations stuff, and who likes to clean up and make sure my area of responsibility is in tip top shape even where people don't typically look.
But most people don't think about the cleanup and maintenance phase of an IT project, so they leave their mess everywhere. Which is frankly somewhere between annoying and infuriating.

@afewbugs I struggled with this too. For stuff that is literally every week at set times I now have a chores calendar group with reminders.
For other stuff I have tasks, and when 'completing' I essentially snooze a custom time. You never get the satisfaction of closing it, unless you want to copy it again and again all manually 😥

Hah, your e-ink setup is much fancier than mine (I just have a ~4am cron-job that sends my daily agenda to my phone-specific email account so that I have it on my phone). But nice work!

@afewbugs i think to a certain extent it's just *easier* to make a task manager that only handles one-off tasks. a lot easier.
which is to say, there may (only may) be no misogeny here, just a complete lack of ability to actually *define* the problem before they try to solve it…

@afewbugs Yes, but not directly.
Nextcloud itself doesn't support recurring tasks (or didn't when I last used, a couple of years ago, but it seems the issue still remains), and this issue is something that has surfaced a few times over the years.
There is, however, a workaround, which I've used since I encountered this particular issue.
You'll need to use your phone to set up recurring tasks and mark them complete.
And you'll need to use DavX5 and Tasks to do it (not sure that there's an equivalent for Apple devices, those are the two programs I use on Android).
When you use those two combined, Tasks will correctly recreate the recurring task on Nextcloud.

@afewbugs would love to see more support for recurring tasks! Blaming men for the lacking feature seems kinda weird though. I see a lot of seemingly male users willing to pay for this feature: https://help.nextcloud.com/t/repeating-tasks/225106/21. Have you tried implementing that yourself instead of demanding it from men? I guess many people also just have other ways to keep track of these things, such as recurring calendar events with notifications, alarms, reminder apps, or they're good at remembering them.

@afewbugs I had looked into this a while ago and from a technical perspective the WebCAL and iCalendar standards which are used by Nextcloud and many others support recurring tasks. However, support for it seems to depend on both the server and the client and many lack support for it. I'm not really sure why; I assume it's just difficult to implement and/or not enough people asked about it. But if you use the right client it should work with Nextcloud.

@afewbugs the web interface doesn't have the ability, but some clients do. i use @jtx, but due to the lack of support in the web interface i don't use recurring tasks at all (and i would really love to). while for some it might be ok to just use a compatible client, for me it's not enough if it doesn't work in the web interface

@_elena regarding LLMs, it's crazy from developers' perspective. BIG tech is pushing LLMs hard to developers, saying you'll lose job or will be paid less if not using LLMs. That's what they are pushing, my colleague did even said "If you're not going to use it, you'll lose job or will be paid more." My boss doesn't like to use LLM for development, so far so good, but there is huge push and pressure towards it.
