#kde is doing this real cool thing where if I hover the mouse over scribus or krita, the cursor shrinks.

ok I installed a half dozen desktop environments and mate is the only one that didn't make me feel like something was horribly wrong upon opening it (incidentally, I don't think it supports wayland, but it was smart enough to set the dpi scale to 200% instead of 100% so I could actually read anything right away) so I guess I'm gonna just run that for a while and see how it feels.

@pupxel i tried it out briefly about an hour ago. it has the shrinking cursor problem, didn't bother sticking around after i confirmed that.

@pupxel the version packaged in fedora is super buggy (the desktop background renders corrupted and sometimes just crashes) and there is no way to change the keyboard layout, BUT this is the first time full 10 finger multi touch has worked correctly in mollytime, so i may give it further consideration, assuming it working is not also some kind of ephemeral bug

@aeva the whole linux mint team is big on NIH, they created their own GUI lib and redid standard linux apps lol so if anyone hates stuff not working it's prob them

@pupxel i might download a liveusb for it and see if everything Just Works later this weekend. I've got the "former project lead" of fedora in my mentions in another thread saying mcc and I wrong to complain about wayland, so between that and literally every desktop environment in fedora being broken in some way i'm feeling like maybe I need to put fedora on cooldown

everyone who told me to switch to KDE because wayland is good actually you just have to use the good wayland which is KDE and not gnome? i feel betrayed, and also i now have significant doubts about your attention to detail and general observational skills

ironically all of this is framework's fault, because if they either put a slightly better or slightly worse screen into this laptop such that it wouldn't have needed fractional dpi scaling, then i probably would only be hating wayland only about half as much
@aeva I e never got the idea behind fractional DPI scaling.. like, why would anyone think “scaling this one pixel to 1.75 pixels surely will look great!”

@heals well implemented fractional dpi is necessary for me to be able to use my laptop regardless of if you understand how to implement it correctly

@aks @redstrate it's alright, i appreciate the sentiment. as long as i have the resolution scale at 1:1, which is fine for the cintiq, the cursor bug doesn't happen, so it's avoidable, but from everything i can tell it's a known issue that's a consequence of wayland's design, and every wayland competitor has the same bug.

@aks @redstrate if it were just that i'd probably just try to suck it up or find a work around despite it being a trigger for me, but the hard-coded 3 and 4 finger gesture cancel thing that can't be prevented without forking kwin is the much greater problem (gnome also has its own version of this problem), because it means the virtual instrument application i'm writing will be unplayable on the vast majority of linux machines

I’m used to even scales 1 to 1/2/3/4 pixels etc fractional never gave me sharp fonts and I need my text to not be blurry around the edges

@heals ah, so what you mean is, the fallback behavior for applications that don't support dpi scaling is ugly/frustrating/etc? that's fair

AFAIK that wayland bug you mention is a bug between different toolkits. But I may be wrong here.

@aeva if you have time for it, can you make a bugreport about your issue to https://bugs.kde.org at some point? So devs who can help have repro steps for it.

You need information about a person? On Internet they could tell what they want but if you ride your bike and move around the city, ring bells, knock at shops doors, asking about John Doe, folks who know him, will tell you who he really is. Fedi is the same: slower to be followed but follower are real. #fediverse
