Obsolete Tech / Dasher Deals in SLC is unfortunately closing at the end of this year, but for now they're liquidating vintage tech at great prices.
I picked up a VT220 virtual terminal, Commodore 1541 floppy drive, TRS-80 Pocket Computer 2, AlphaSmart Pro, C.ITOH Prowriter Jr. dot matrix printer, Logitech P7-3F mouse, C64 joysticks, CoCo books, and some ribbons.
Acquired 2026-01-16.

@elb I thought it was just PS/2, but it's a weird bus mouse, so I'd need to rig up a microcontroller to use it with a modern system. Feels like more work than its worth.

@thalia Oh ... I have one that looks just like it that's serial (I think DE-9, but maybe DB-25, even?). I also have a Logitech bus mouse and the associated ISA adapter board, but I'm pretty sure (without looking) that it's two-button.

@thalia Yeah but cool stuff is cool stuff. ;-) Keep your eyes open and take opportunities when they come up and are practical and affordable. I'm most of a generation older than you; we have to find people in every generation to keep this history alive.

@elb I've started going after the smallest computers, until I have more space. I have a Silent 700 703 shipping, which I believe is the smallest teleprinter model. Also, I want a TRS-80 MC-10 (the smaller Color Computer precursor) and TRS-80 Model 100 or 102 (also small). Oh, and I already have a TRS-80 Pocket Computer 2. So many unrelated TRS-80 models!

@elb I've started going after the smallest computers, until I have more space. I have a Silent 700 703 shipping, which I believe is the smallest teleprinter model. @thalia Space is real, too, for sure. The model 703 is super cute, I keep one in my office. :-) I also have a TI serial adapter that plugs into the audio coupler port and contains a modem and line drivers to adapt it to RS-232 on a DB-25 -- I've never seen another like it.
If yours won't feed the paper when it comes, go to an office supply store and get new fax paper for it; the old stuff gets really slick and the old hard rubber rollers sometimes won't feed it, but will feed new paper.

Its twin model, the 707, has acoustic coupler, wall, and phone connectors and has an internal modem. I picked the 703, because I wanted RS-232 without any extra hardware. I think you're talking about the 707?

@thalia My mistake, yeah, I have 707s. There's also a 1200 (or maybe even 2400?) baud 703, which would be fantastic, but the 703 is much less common than the 707 and the 703 1200 baud is even less common yet.

@thalia This isn't my "regular" coffee shop, but here is one such instance. At my regular coffee shop I was hacking the O1 one day and I heard a woman ask one of the owners if he knew what I was doing. He replied, "oh, that's Ethan, he's always up to something." ;-)

@elb No idea which baud rate mine is; the sticker doesn't show. I've only seen 300 baud mentioned, so it must be quite rare.

There was a time when we had better leaders in the US and the Soviet Union.
An important meeting was in this house in Reykjavík, Iceland in 1986 between Reagan and Gorbatsjev. This was maybe the beginning of the end of the cold war and also the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union.
I think of that meeting every time I drive past this house on the way to work in Iceland.

This is a time for deescalation. I believe America is strongest when we live up to our highest ideals, when we treat everyone with dignity and respect no matter who they are or where they’re from, and when we embrace our shared humanity.
