you can never have enough control surfaces

@gsuberland looks like a good starting point imho
@gsuberland on a second note, there are not enough motor faders in this picture

@xchange it's ok, one day I'll build my own bootleg grandMA3 command wing, complete with motor faders :P

@xchange oh, on a sad note, Bourns are discontinuing pretty much all of their good motorised faders :(

@gsuberland on the last new years eve the guys from the other floor had a fullblown gma2 replica plus fader wing they bought on aliexpress for 2k or so and it somehow made its way through customs and they managed to get it running with original software
it was kind of impressive and they told me their computer must never ever ever ever be connected to the internet. not sure i would do this for myself but i was a bit jealous :D

@ozzelot if I had an APC40 then I'd 100% use that here, 'cos the rotary encoders on that are lovely, but one of those costs over 4x what an APC Mini Mk2 does.
-
I also have an MPK Mini Mk2, but I don't think I have much need for that here.
at some point I need to build myself a little USB MIDI thing that's just got a bunch of nice jogger knobs on it, maybe with a nice laser cut diffuser so I can have an LED ring around each one to mark positions.
-
@discatte @ozzelot my plan at some point is to build a long fully custom control surface with rotary encoder jog wheels, each with a ring of WS2816B-2121 LEDs for indication and position marking. not hard to set that up for USB MIDI.
that'd then be a good starter project to get more familiar with the stack, ready for when I eventually build a custom grandMA3 Command Wing clone for onPC.

@gsuberland and I'm guessing a nice thing about not needing to care about a profit margin is you can treat yourself to what would be an unnecessarily nice or overbuilt part for the actual controls, so that it feels nicer when you're using it than you could realistically find in consumer hardware.

@DanHatesNumbers generally yeah. I won't be able to reach the overall polish of something like an Akai APC40, since most of that comes from the enclosure, but in terms of the part choices and features I can go as fancy as I like.

@gsuberland nice set. Maybe I should add an APC to my list. I really need a proper beat input medium

@gsuberland I got the MPK mini play and it's nice for adhoc melody creation but I concur that wouldn't fit in here.
Anyhow the 20x USB panel in the background... That is something. Good you have some room for improvement with other devices 😄

@ppxl "only" 16 ports, but yeah, it's nice. Sabrent USB 3.2 90W powered hub.
