Yes. If no one on, say, mastodon.social is following you then none of your posts will show up in the global timeline there or in searches or in hashtags. Also if you have few followers your posts will receive few boosts so hardly anyone will follow you. So we end up with a handful of wildly popular accounts dominating the conversations which mostly happen on the big instances. Centralised power. Bad. The threadiverse solves this. People don't follow other people, they join communities and it's their membership that determines where the federation traffic goes. So nearly every instance has all the conversation and everyone is on an equal footing.

I've just updated my #Snac instance, to version 2.85 👍 🎉You don't know Snac? But you should: https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2A simple, minimalistic and well documented #ActivityPub instance server written in C, no database needed, totally JavaScript-free, no cookies either, not much bullshit.Do you see this post? It comes from a Snac server. The Fediverse is larger than you assume 😉#snac2 #fediverse #frugalfediverse

Sometime I see people do the following and I do not know why.1. Start a thread with its visibility set to "public". (post A)2. Get a reply with its visibility set to "public". (post B)3. Reply to that "public" reply with your reply's visibility set to "unlisted". (post C)Is it to protect the privacy of post B's user? The topics are often technical, not personal, so that makes little sense to me.Is it to reduce the number of posts in your public feed? Wouldn't your subscribers want to read the technical discussions in which you participate? Why do they do that? If it is due to the default behaviour of the software they use, why was this behaviour chosen by the author of that software?#activitypub#etiquette#help#netiquette#theguidetotheperplexed

julian@activitypub.space I am subscribed to 4 relays: https://relay.minecloud.ro/actor https://relay.publicsquare.global/actor https://relay.infosec.exchange/actor https://rel.re/actor I did have others added that sat at 'Pending' for days (I guess some relay admin are not monitoring requests), but they have been removed.
