Have you heard of W Social?
-
@hpod16 lol, I just tried this URL: https://stage.wsocial.eu
It simply IS Bluesky. There's only Bluesky posts there, but pretending to be an European alternative 𤥠Unfortunately, WSocial has got full media coverage today. But
that actually works, does not! -

It's that first step that is tricky. Finding the instance that suits you before you've had a chance to explore the platform.
That said, migrating instances isn't impossible, I just think that initial step overwhelms people. It did, me, the first time I tried MD years ago.
I probably still have a mastodon.social profile somewhere out there@hpod16 I'm in my first instance đ
First change was to spread out from mastodon.social, and the second (final hopefully) jump was combination of things; like minded people, nice admin and 10 000 character posts đ

@doktorzjivago @hpod16 @dalcacer No, I don't think EU should run Mastodon instances or the like for the general public, only for official institutions. But EU should support the development of non-commercial federated social media like Mastodon.
-
@hpod16 This instance âprovides a communication environment for state authorities, state politicians, local authorities, public organisations and recognised non-profit organisations.â (See https://social.schleswig-holstein.de/directory?order=new for examples.)
Agreed, we need more governments to have their own Mastodon instance. That way, they have their own recognisable social media channel that anyone can read, even without an account.
The Dutch government already has https://social.overheid.nl, where more and more organisations (including provinces and municipalities) are active. The city of Amsterdam has its own instance at https://social.amsterdam.nl.

Some other (EU, DE, FR) government instances are listed on https://social.overheid.nl/about#:~:text=Duitsland,https://social.edps.europa.eu.
Hopefully, other EU countries will follow suit. It would be good if this were actively encouraged by the European Commission.

@kallekn @doktorzjivago @hpod16 They did đ
And still, they could funnel some money in running an instance over a democracy oriented NGO or whatnot.
See, if instances can survive donation based and with passion of few, it would mean almost no cost for EU to fund or kick start an instance/campaign.

@dalcacer @doktorzjivago @hpod16 They could and should support it more. But I seriously don't think they should be involved at all in running instances.

Hard agree on that. EU, national parliaments and governments should all run their own instances and host elected officials there.
Today, if I go to Twitter to see what an elected official has said, I often canât read it without logging in.
This is a huge democracy obstacle.
Which in turn means that any journalist that is covering political issues also must have an account there.
This needs to change.

I think we need to talk more about how great EU's Next Generation Internet initiative is. Mastodon is just one out of hundreds of projects that have been much improved (or even made possible at all) thanks to it.Expanding it and duplicating it to other software fields is in my opinion the best shot at getting rid of all those icky foreign service and software dependencies.

I probably still have a mastodon.social profile somewhere out there@hpod16 that's (partly) true, IMHO: ppl just want to register as quick as possible and might find the choice of servers as an obstacle.
On the other hand, ppl apparently like get on a wait list for Bluesky or now W-Bluesky đ , which is the the opposite of an easy access.
But I do see the point and that's why https://joinmastodon.org basically says: "continue with mastodon.social or choose your individual server". It's a choice, not mandatory. Same as for not using any form of algorithm.

@hpod16@eupolicy.social I do believe, though, that this should be communicated better!
For the rest, actually I found registering on
easier than on commercial platforms before, because it asks for less personal data. E-mail, username, password, that's it. No telephone number, no location or even ID (Facebook once asked me for it). Oh, your old profile on Mastodon probably is @hpod16 (easy, the same username, just on another instance).
-
@hpod16 what comes to mind is "double why?? we already have the Fediverse !"
-
@BrennpunktUA@mastodon.social where did you find the link? Does it use the Bluesky relay? That would be a hell of a start for our european independent social network @hpod16@eupolicy.social
@SparkIT #WSocial (currently) uses Bluesky-everything, not just the relay or even just Bluesky's AT-protocol.
Menus, everything is identical, it shows đŻ posts coming from Bluesky from #Bluesky (and bridged
!) profiles. They only changed the landing page and even forgot to remove the name "Bluesky" from some meta texts and also from the legal notices đ
And I would lie if I said, I didn't simply google it. What some/many of the journalists out there should have done, too!
-
@jetsoft @karlos @BrennpunktUA
I agree the phone app is a little... clunky.
I much prefer using Mastodon on my laptop.
Luckily that's my job and being logged in on social media 8 hours a day is already what I do. đ@hpod16 just saying: you don't have to use the (official or any other)
app on your mobile either, to use Mastodon. You can simply log into https://eupolicy.social just as you do with your laptop.I personally prefer the web interface over apps anyways; and it's a quite well working one (IMHO)!
Also, you can install the eupolicy.social website as an "web app" on your phone and it will work similar to an app. Maybe you'll find yourself better with this option, too?

@BrennpunktUA @SparkIT LOL
Well. Someone should probably tell these journalists about Mastodon... -

Ohhh you found my old profile! Amazing!
Ok, so I have a noob question, and I still get to ask these because it's my second day on here:
How come I don't see the posts on my old profile?
What am I missing?
I guess it has something to do with this being on a different instance? đ -

The "web app" thing is a good tip!
Does that work with any browser? I currently use Ecosia -
