  • @lordbowlich @jzb everyone attacks TPS reports but, at least in my small sample size, the overwhelming majority of this isn’t “bullshit jobs.” It’s a symptom of regulations, information gathering, under resourcing, and, critically, domains you aren’t a master of. Many professions are filled with people whose conceit leads them to believe they understand the work of everyone else better than those people do themselves.

    No, bureaucracy is the bullshit. See James C. Scott's "Seeing Like a State." Doesn't matter if it's required to meet regulations or because of under resourcing. Push the decision making to lower tiers and trust the experts in those lower tiers to make the decisions. Get rid of hierarchical systems of control and you get rid of the bullshit jobs.

    (Certainly, they reached for plagiarism, the correct word, but leveled at the students and not at all at the service provider.)

    Well, I’d still call them nuts because the tech is nowhere near good enough, but at least it would be a plan.

    @jzb i think the problem is more that workers have much greater work ethics than generally acknowledged, and if a tool allow them to work faster, they'll do more work, not not reclaim more time.

    Back to business: You are right. Every person who is "just doing the job" is endangered losing exactly this job, as AI will do it better and more efficiently. So the solution is to have a society of individuals who are smart enough to cope with it in an intelligent way. If not, the tech bros might win for a while, before all collapses.

    @jzb i think many of your examples are in fact very much how people are being sold these products (the phrasing i've heard is "boutique" used to describe "code that someone wrote to solve a problem"). the idea of getting rich quick is commonly employed by capital to defang revolutionary movements that would otherwise band together in groups like unions, understanding there is no shortcut to success

    @jzb i don't think people should be trying to cheat their employers. i think employers think that because they're constantly trying to cheat their employees. if your employer isn't going to pay you enough, it's a waste of your time not to leave instead of trying to engage in fraud

Hospitals. Public housing. Public transport. Universities. Roads projects. Mental health services. Welfare payments.People literally went homeless or starved, so rich people could get tax cuts.Because the wealth would trickle down.Eventually the eroding of public goods caused social dislocation.So governments further cut those public goods to fund more police and prisons. To continue giving tax cuts to rich people.But they said the wealth would trickle down.Eventually the climate started changing because of the amount of toxic fossil fuel pollution in the atmosphere.So governments chose to keep the tax cuts rather than fund infrastructure to reduce emissions.(Many of those billionaires getting tax cuts made their money selling toxic fossil fuels.)And as the oceans and atmosphere warmed, the bushfires, droughts, hurricanes, cyclones, floods, and droughts got worse.But they said the wealth would trickle down.Eventually people were getting pissed off at the dire state of the world.The rich misdirected that anger at immigrants!And First Nations!And trans people!And neurodivergent people!Anyone but the billionaires who got the tax cuts.So governments chose to keep the tax cuts. All the underfunded schools? All the draconian welfare cuts? All the public housing shortages?
