decent growth rate on the forkiverse this week.

decent growth rate on the forkiverse this week. if it continues at this rate (i think it almost certainly will) we should be at 213 million users by next year. although obviously this is an estimate, and it's possible that the growth rate increases.
@pj in another post you bemoan the lack of crypto scams. And yet here you have a beautiful big number showing growth. And in this case it might even do good for humanity.

@pj Love this! Thanks for making this, I was already interested in Mastodon and just didn' know how to start!

@pj@theforkiverse.com fan of both shows and excited to see where this experiment takes you guys. Wonder what benefits could be leveraged as perks for subscribers
Another down the road possibility is a white label app for users of your instance @newsmast@newsmast.social has done wonderfully providing affordable services on that front -

@pj I thought there was a limit of 2000 people! This is amazing! Meow.

@pj @kevin The #forkiverse, which started like yesterday, is already in the top-25 most active servers (by MAU): https://fedidb.com/servers/theforkiverse.com 👏

@pj if you ask for one dollar per year person you could get 4000 usd

in true decentralized fashion, you should start another one based on the search engine name. then talk other tech podcasters like @cwarzel.bsky.social into starting one.
this is fun but the better model is public servers based on locality while media properties like podcasters start instances just for their staff. like they have websites and/or email servers. ideally every podcast episode would be its own #ActivityPub item, not just have a post that links to it.
@wjmaggos @pj @cwarzel.bsky.social what an interesting idea.
I was wondering about a federated substack a while back... That would be interesting, how to pay creators on fedi? -
Your experiment is super interesting. I am checking out the podcast right now.
Best of luck, and welcome!
@astroPug @pj some might move to another Instance... But I hope they stay within the #fediverse, as the benefits far outweigh the cost.

I think #ghost and #wordpress are doing that. to pay creators, I think we need a protocol and then an autopay system based on a monthly amount we are willing to give, distributed based on time with a creator's works.

@wjmaggos @pj @cwarzel.bsky.social yes, ghost sort of does it.
I did dive a little into adding mastodon / activity pub to WordPress too, but got caught up with work.
I think a creator protocol is a great idea!
I imagined a subscription model for #foss and #creators where you track who you visit/consume each month. Then reward a % of your subscription to them.
Roadblocks
1. How to manage it?
2. Transaction costs
3. How to track it?This discussion, and being on fedi, makes me... /

@wjmaggos @pj @cwarzel.bsky.social.. Think it should be a user thing. Maybe a federated payment server? Or something.
You install your own personal tracker, and rules about how to distribute the funds. Then the funds are sent to the local fedi pay server of the creator.
All controlled by the user. Owned by the user.
Maybe it is a ETH coin that is currency tied, to reduce transaction costs.
That part can come later.
The important thing is personal tracking, via personal data... / -

@wjmaggos @pj @cwarzel.bsky.social... Something like @kevin's reader app, that you setup yourself.
Just not sure how to it to track in apps. But maybe a new masto/activity pub reader fork could add this ability where you put your personal tracking server details there. Some api hosted by a federated fedipay server. That you can host yourself, or join other accounts. Same sort of rules as the fediverse. -

I'd stay away from crypto. have your apps report creator and time/month to your bank and have them manage the pool of money and distribution using an open protocol.

yes, crypto doesn't have a great reputation - but I think this is the type of think it was actually designed for - small transactions, low cost, fast.
But adding a level of difficulty for now.Maybe just start with tracking and self reporting.
Then add the "pool of money" distribution part. Relatively difficult given the global world, and the not so global currency/ banking system.
But someone like #Wise might be able to help with that -
