  • @stefan I think you're tying yourself in a lot of knots to not accept that what people want, when they get replies to their followers-only posts, is to have those replies visible to their followers.

When you see a followers-only post, the default audience for your reply should be the OP's followers.

I'd like to make it clear that this is possible with ActivityPub, and it's the way other social networks handle this feature.

If *you* think that your message should be between you and Alice, wouldn't be *your* responsibility to set it to private?

  • @evan But it can also be a bit awkward when a mutual I don't know too well posts a followers-only post, and I show up "in their DMs", so to speak, when I'm just trying to be mindful of their privacy.

  • @evan Yes, perhaps I could have phrased the original question better.

My thinking was, currently, a follower can reply to a followers-only post, with a followers-only reply.

So their followers can reply back to you, without seeing the original post, potentially deducing and further exposing personal information contained in the original post.

This is a dilemma I myself have sometimes, when I see a followers-only post. Sometimes it just makes sense for me to reply directly, eg. health status updates.

If I replied with a followers-only post saying "good luck with the heart surgery", all my followers will deduce that Alice is having a heart surgery.

    You said:

    > So if you only expect to hear from your followers,

    That wasn't the question.

    > without reply controls,

    Irrelevant.

    > the visibility of the replies to your post would have to be limited only to you,

No, to your *followers*, which is what everyone said?

    > or, potentially, to you and mutual followers of you and the person replying, but not the followers of the person replying that don't follow you directly.

That was an option and an unpopular answer.

The question was: "Who do you expect to see replies from when you post a followers-only post?"

And the overwhelmingly most popular answer was "My own followers".

When people say that they expect their followers to see replies, then they expect their followers to see replies.

  • @stefan@stefanbohacek.online @evan@cosocial.ca The problem with Private Mentions is it doesn't allow for new followers and there is a character limit making mentioned be very limited when you have anywhere close to 100+ followers

  • @evan Well the question was:

"Who do you expect to see replies from when you post a followers-only post?"

So if you only expect to hear from your followers, without reply controls, the visibility of the replies to your post would have to be limited only to you, or, potentially, to you and mutual followers of you and the person replying, but not the followers of the person replying that don't follow you directly.

I think private mentions handle this well and rather simply.

@elettrona @fediverso @evan I guess I mean ragebait? Like it can be a good resource talking about bad stuff but I won't usually share someone saying bullshit to say "this is bullshit"

I think I have identified a fairly significant flaw in how the #Fediverse currently operates. Hear me out.The Fediverse currently consists of all sorts of different systems - #Mastodon, #Friendica , #Pixelfed , #PeerTube, #BookWyrm , and so forth. And while they are all connected via the #ActivityPub protocol, they all have different functionalities and different ways of presenting themselves. Which is as it should be, because Diversity Is Our Strength(TM).However, it is here that the ActivityPub-based interactivity hits its limits - for usually, you can either experience the relevant system as it was intended, or you can interact with it, but not both - _unless_ you have an account on the same system (though not necessarily on the same instance).Let's say that you are a Mastodon user who looks at another person's BookWyrm page. You scroll through their books, posts, and comments. Then you see some comment you want to comment on yourself, but can you do so?Not directly. You need to figure out the URL of their comment, and then copy and paste that comment into the search bar of your Mastodon instance. Then it will show up in the same format as a Mastodon post, and you can interact with it - boost it, like it, comment on it.Sure, it works, but it's a whole lot of tedious effort.Or you can search for the user account in Mastodon and scroll through all their posts and comments as if they were a Mastodon user - and thus, you will miss out on all the unique user interface features of BookWyrm. So what is missing?Well, Mastodon already has an "Open original page" feature when looking at someone's post. What we need is an "Open original page AND AUTHENTICATE" feature. This way, the target instance (whatever software they are using) could acknowledge the viewer as an external user who could nevertheless fully interact with the local user interface, including the ability to boost, like, and make comments. This is something that should be theoretically possible to implement, right? #FediHelp

I've noticed this when reading news articles or listening to podcasts. They'll talk about someone announcing this or that, and then embed a Tweet. And I'm looking for the link to the thing in the Tweet, and there isn't any. The Tweet is the thing.
