UpdateFediMeteo will now use MET Norway as a failover provider.I had already implemented multi-provider support, but after this morning’s issues I decided to change the behavior: we will continue using the excellent OpenMeteo as the primary provider, but in case of malfunction, the bot will automatically fetch data from MET Norway (https://www.met.no and still provide forecasts, citing the source. In the coming days, I will also update the website to reflect these changes.#FediMeteo #FediMeteoUpdated #FediMeteoAnnouncements

@zleap @aleciabatson Hello Paul! I'll have a look at it tomorrow morning. If it's a small town, it could not be present on Open-Meteo. In case, is there another place we could use as a reference, but close enough?Meanwhile, thank you for the link!

Bug Fix: Wind Direction Arrows Now Correct! Thanks to user feedback, I've fixed a bug where wind arrows were pointing in the wrong direction.Previously, a 160° wind (from the south) showed an arrow pointing south ↓. Now it correctly shows ↑, pointing north where the wind is blowing to.Wind arrows now follow the intuitive convention: they point in the direction the wind is moving, not where it's coming from. Thanks to our community for catching this!#FediMeteo #BugFix #WeatherBot #FediMeteoUpdates

Happy New Year, #FediMeteo friends!New year, new features! Let’s go step by step:Some results for city coordinates were not fully accurate, and forecasts were referring to the center of the administrative area rather than the actual city center. This also affected my own city, with a shift of about 30 km. I have revised the coordinate calculation process and, starting from the next update, the reference point will be the center of the target city. I actually discovered this while implementing the last item on this list...In addition to wind speed, FediMeteo will now include an arrow showing wind direction. The direction will also be reported as a value in degrees. This feature has been requested several times in the past, and I think the time has come to introduce it.New data added: AQI, the Air Quality Index. Using different indices for each local context would have been complicated, and reporting them all would have made the output unnecessarily complex. For this reason, I chose to use the American AQI for all cities, with a visual indicator to quickly understand the situation at a glance. This is consistent with major weather apps and allows for proper comparisons between different cities. PM2.5 and PM10 values are also included.I hope these new features will be useful and… let’s keep moving forward!#FediMeteoUpdates #FediMeteoAnnouncements

Hi @stefanoReally appreciate your contribution in creating fedimeteo.I hadn’t tracked its rollout to Canada and have only recently started following for our location.Since you’ve let us know that you’re open to suggestions, here’s a thought.I don’t know if your opendata source has this since it’s not internationally standardized, but it would be super helpful and interesting to have air quality forecasts included.Canada has the AQHI (Air Quality Health Index), established by Health Canada, that’s included in our forecasts from WeatherCan. (Other countries have different composite measures and forecasts.)Since there have been severe air quality impacts from climate-change related wildfires, Canadians have become more aware of the AQHI and forecasts of poor air quality.Where such forecasts exist, it would seem that the fediverse would be interested and would want to have them.#fedimeteo #AirQuality #AQHI #ClimateChange #Wildfires

@stefano @openmeteo @grunfink @FediFollows Thanks for the tip; open-meteo.com looks interesting. Is there similar, known-good source for radar data? I was playing with short term rain prediction using data from chmi, but they changed website and it is now broken :-(. https://gitlab.com/tui/tui/-/tree/master/nowcast?ref_type=heads

Exactly one year ago, on 30th December 2024, I laid the foundation of FediMeteo.I took a VM, installed FreeBSD, and set up the first jail to support Italy. The goal was to create a tool for my own use, support a few countries, and announce it.Unexpectedly, the enthusiasm was incredible. That pushed me to keep going, support more countries and cities, and turn it into what it is today.FediMeteo now supports 38 countries and 2,937 cities, with more than 7,700 followers in the Fediverse alone, not counting the many people who follow via RSS feeds or visit the web pages. If you are curious to read the story and some technical details, you can find it here:https://it-notes.dragas.net/2025/02/26/fedimeteo-how-a-tiny-freebsd-vps-became-a-global-weather-service-for-thousands/Today is also Tuesday, a #ThankYouTuesday, so I want to say thanks to:OpenMeteo - @openmeteo@fosstodon.org - for providing accurate, high quality data, without which FediMeteo would be far less useful@grunfink@comam.es - creator of snac, who made all of this possible using very few resources, on a 4 euro per month VMFreeBSD, which thanks to the efficiency of the OS and its jail implementation made it possible to run this service in a stable and efficient way with minimal effortFediFollows - @FediFollows@social.growyourown.services - that periodically spreads the word about cities, countries, and the enthusiasm around the projectAll of you, who suggested, encouraged, corrected, and celebrated this projectAnd forward toward supporting more countries and other interesting features already in the works.Happy birthday, FediMeteo! 🎉#FediMeteo #HappyBirthday #Meteo #Weather #FreeBSD #snac #snac2 #OpenMeteo #Fediverse

Ciao, FediMeteo! In the past few days FediMeteo seemed to be having some performance trouble. I dug into it and only found minor issues, until I realised the VM itself had fallen off a cliff. After several reboots it became clear that both bandwidth and I/O latency had dropped to absurd levels. I suspect the provider slapped a cap on it.So I took the chance to move everything to another VM and provider, still at 4 euro per month. And starting today, forecasts will be delivered straight from Italy. The performance jump feels like going from a storm to clear skies.FediMeteo’s mission goes on. More countries are coming (stay tuned!) and we will keep aiming to serve everything from a 4 euro VM. I do have powerful hardware available, but proving that the project can run on tiny resources is still part of the mission.#FediMeteo #FediMeteoAnnouncements #FediMeteoServices #VM #RunBSD #FreeBSD

Under the hood update!I’ve finally retired the old cron + sh setup for the weather bots. It served us well, but it had a major flaw: if I rebooted the server while it was posting, the job just died halfway. If the server was down during a scheduled slot, the forecast was lost forever. So, I wrote a custom Python daemon to run inside the FreeBSD Jails. It’s stateful now. If a crash happens at city 15 of 50, it resumes exactly there on reboot. If the server naps/is rebooting during a scheduled run, the bot realizes it missed a slot and runs immediately upon waking up.#FediMeteo #SysAdmin #Python #FreeBSD #Coding #SelfHosted #OwnYourData #StayTuned

Hello, new #FediMeteo friends! As the great @FediFollows@social.growyourown.services posted about this service, many of you started following me and the cities. And I'm so glad about it!If you want to know something more about FediMeteo and its story (and how all this is still working on a 4 euro/month VPS powered by #FreeBSD), you can have a look here:FediMeteo: How a Tiny €4 FreeBSD VPS Became a Global Weather Service for Thousands - https://it-notes.dragas.net/2025/02/26/fedimeteo-how-a-tiny-freebsd-vps-became-a-global-weather-service-for-thousands/
