@aboutsignal Signal relying on USA servers, maintained by an USA foundation, presided over by an USA resident. Yeah I guess?
I still like and use Signal, but how do you plan to operate in a fascist country?

@aboutsignal take photos within signal using the in-app camera. Never save to phone gallery. But, if signal hold phone numbers in their servers for 1 week = could be compromised for those listed over that week.
Or just just SimpleX Chat (take photos with in-app camera on this, too) & Briar (can only select photos from gallery.)

@aboutsignal Every European should do the same. While our leaders are constrained by dependence on the US, we as citizens have the freedom to take action.

Hopefully, more and more people in Europe will switch away from the fascist tech bros from the USA. -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_(software)If that is your threat model, you should be much more worried.
The internet at large is US tech.
Most content is behind CDNs from the US. Even some of the fediverse. Even some of the European Commission servers. Even some of your government services.
Beyond CDNs, all browsers are from the US.
Beyond browsers, the entirety of DNS, PKI, etc., is controlled by the US.
Banks depend entirely on the US. Even the ECB.
We are entirely US owned.
Time to wake up, maybe?

Yes I know. I worried. A lot. That's why I posted. -

@aboutsignal Trump wants “privacy for me, but not for thee”
We have a right to privacy when we communicate, even in our everyday conversations.

Session seems a more robust solution:
Our family immediately left WhatsApp for Signal in January 2025, based on the US election and the 51st state threats. Now I am thinking Signal wasn't the best choice due to it's dependency on US infrastructure...
Thoughts?

What do you make of session's connection to a crypto something-or-other?

What do you make of session's connection to a crypto something-or-other?
@MarvinFreeman @aboutsignal @pluralistic Interesting. I see from Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_(software) :
Session uses the Loki blockchain network for transmissions. In 2021, an independent review by the third-party Quarkslab verified these claims. In 2025, Session announced that it had migrated to its own network, the Session Network — a decentralized, open-source blockchain network designed to transmit encrypted data, specifically for the Session messenger.
I'm not knowledgeable enough to make a call on this. Interested in others' thoughts...

@TehAppKiller @aboutsignal this is not true. Signal's server is open source. Signal does not control user encryption keys. Signal does not store user contacts. Signal backups are encrypted.

@alexblock @aboutsignal @pluralistic I'm sorry. I didn't mean session itself.
I meant this:
https://token.getsession.org/faq#what-is-session-token
With the possibility of "premium" features.

@jztusk @TehAppKiller @aboutsignal We use this:
It works superbly. Unfortunately, owned by zoom.

What is purpose of demanding phone number verification for sign up?
Why linux phones are not supported and only Android (Google) and iOS (Apple) duopoly considered?
What it does mean when it is said that "Tablets are not supported" here? https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360008216551-Installing-Signal -

I have been using, am happy with and can highly recommend SimpleX:
It's not as polished and is a bit more technical, but for me the extra effort was worth it.
Another issue with Signal--apart from using AWS and Google servers and being US based--is the fact that you need a mobile number and a smartphone. If you don't log in for a while with an iOS or Android app, your Signal account is deleted. I learned it the hard way. Thus, I set up SimpleX, informed my family and friends and did not look back.
