@dch those are beautiful sentiments. makes me miss living in the Colorado rockies, hearing elk rutting during the autumn as they trample anyone and everyone's yard as they please...
and I miss going cross-country skiing out in the back-country, usually in the mornings before work... hopping up into my brother's lifted and absolutely freezing soft-top jeep, miss him too.
the simple things are critical, it's a good reminder.

@jhx oooh for sure... and I love the dock. a real dock, where the laptop has a dedicated port on the bottom and connects to it without the dongle jungle mess of modern laptops.
potential fixes of imperfectness:
1. Framework laptop and similar
2. Gemini protocol web for simplicity
3. e-waste... sadly this is probably only going to get worse.

Quanta astronomia si è memorizzata su queste bobine a nastro, ormai sconosciute ai più! Eppure perfino le sponde Voyager ai confini estremi del Sistema Solare hanno dei registratori a nastro (orami fermi) al loro interno.
Onore a questa tecnologia ormai obsoleta alla quale però dobbiamo tantissimo!

@stefano I wish for a future where home users entrusts a local IT technician to setup backups and other IT stuff rather than paying cloud subscriptions and throwing away their devices at the first malfunction.

@stefano Oh, agreed. Even as a tech pro it's not easy. Earlier this year I started the process to de-Google. Not easy by any stretch of the imagination. It isn't so much dealing with Google's walled garden but the fact it's tech is integrated into so many other providers.
While I've moved my mail to a new and more ethical provider, I still have 566GB of stuff sitting in my Google Drive. While my new provider offers encrypted cloud storage, it is still *someone else's* data center. Though, it does inspire some confidence knowing they aren't a part of the NSA's PRISM Program.
There are other products I use which, upon registration, I used my Google account...which is also tied to my Android phone and TV.
Oh, and there's also Google Voice which I use for a variety of things including voicemail across my devices.
Given how tightly integrated companies are to Google (and/or other #bigtech players), it seems the only way to not be tangled in their thorn bushes is to never enter that garden. Ever.
