No Tools for You: A Century of Men Policing Women’s Tools

@adafruit@fosstodon.org as a woman I am offended that you'd compare the actual bullshit our foremothers faced under sexism to people pushing back against AI, a "service" that's buggy, harmful, ecologically damaging, and being used as a tool in class warfare to push people out of their jobs, something that disproportionately happens to women and minorities first.
You should be ashamed of yourself.@deathkitten It's like the "everything I hate is woke" meme but now criticizing "AI" is sexism. It really does cook your brain.

@jwz@mastodon.social even better, I just saw a boost about how the owner will fucking dox people in they criticize the company after having previously donated.
The levels of disgusting here is a shit parfait. -

In 1925 a doctor said vacuum cleaners will make women lazy. In 2026 mastodon dudes said the same thing (and worse) about a woman engineer using a tool to make a CAD part.

@adafruit yet another bad take. You’re really doubling down on this, huh? PS it’s all about the AI and only about the AI, speaking as, erm, a “Mastodon dude”. Read the room.
A disappointed ex-customer.

@Linza @magic_smoke @adafruit "the government is killing us in the streets for exercising our rights, but we should give the government even more power over our lives" is one hell of a platform
@feld@friedcheese.us @adafruit@fosstodon.org @Linza@kamu.social abolish private (not personal) property, turn companies into employee owned co-ops.
The vast majority of people who actually know what their doing have no want or need for generative AI. Make them the decision makers.
Take the decision making power from the overgrown children we call billionaires, and the dipshit stooges they put in management positions.
Better yet, take them and puttem' in fucking guillotines. The (US) government is this way because it was invented by slave owners, and since been bought out by vultures. -

> abolish private property
literally one of the founding principals of this country is the concept of private property. You know, so kings can't just take our shit whenever they want. We'd have to repeal the Fifth Amendment
edit: also really messes with stuff like Castle Doctrine if the government can just be like "well yeah the ICE goons broke into your house without a warrant, but we decided it wasn't your property anymore, so you're guilty of murder"
edit2: and even "well I know forcing you to house our death squads is against the Third Amendment, but we decided it's not your property anymore" -

requiring public companies to be like 50% employee controlled/owned would rule though and completely disrupts the really awful incentives of the current system. Private companies can do whatever they want, but if they're going to join the world's largest casino, i mean stock market, the employees better be getting a huge slice of that action -

@adafruit this is the most insanely tone deaf thing I've read in awhile.
Appropriating very real gender discrimination and leveraging it to distract from real criticisms.
Never recommend adafruit for anything going forward. Absolutely unhinged behavior.

You're not wrong at all. I agree with you. Adafruit has very good street creds, it's just sad to see this happen. Limor Fried is an amazing person and has done so much for the DiY open-hardware community. Her heart is in the right place, that was never in question, its just her embrace of AI in this way is jarring.
For many of us, including myself, Mastodon feels like a last refuge on an internet that is increasingly hostile to authentic human communication. This is why I mute or block blatant brand advertisements and "influencer tactics." I hope Phil reads these words, maybe they need to understand that we, mastodon, are not the internet they think we are and maybe pull that stick out of wherever it is stuck and genuinely enage with us instead of hiding behind a bully pulpit.
Edit: I had unfollowed adafruit yesterday, I just refollowed because I still want to like Adafruit. To you, Adafruit specifically, do right by Mastodon, we are your allies in more ways that one.
To the real "reply-guys" out there on mastodon, go outside and touch grass. lol.
@FuturisticRobert @mcc Lol I had not yet unfollowed at the time of my last toot, but I have since gone and had a look at their more recent timeline, and it seems they are doubling down even more on the Slop, so I did indeed unfollow, an hour or so ago.
All good things have a lifecycle, is also true, I will say.
Assuming the newborn is real, and not a hallucination, it would be rather amusing if this is all happening because she is on a much-needed week off, leaving Phil The Failed Goth to do his thing...

@adafruit just when I thought it couldn’t get worse. I’d try to see things your way, but my doctor advised against blows to the head.

@adafruit I must be a feminist because I hate women using AI just as much as men using it and think they're equally stupid.
-
I'm a woman in science, and I have ordered stuff from Adafruit before. But knowing you're using AI to design it DOES make me less likely to order from you in the future. Not because "women shouldn't use tools," but because AI is not a trustworthy tool.
Tell me you built a house with a glue gun instead of a nail gun, and I won't want to buy the house. Nothing to do with the gender of the person holding the glue gun.
@marymessall @adafruit I dunno, tell me more about the glue.
The one-bedroom house with six bathrooms, on the other hand, can slide.
