No Tools for You: A Century of Men Policing Women’s Tools

@adafruit Using fake feminism and a bunch of invalid comparisons to defend a technology that men are more likely to use than women ( https://arxiv.org/pdf/2310.06556 ) and which use consolidates all power and money into the hands of a few billionares (all men).
No. No collaboration with LLMs, no credibility for LLM defenders, no fascist AI future. And no more Adafruit orders from me

In 1925 a doctor said vacuum cleaners will make women lazy. In 2026 mastodon dudes said the same thing (and worse) about a woman engineer using a tool to make a CAD part.

@adafruit@fosstodon.org as a woman I am offended that you'd compare the actual bullshit our foremothers faced under sexism to people pushing back against AI, a "service" that's buggy, harmful, ecologically damaging, and being used as a tool in class warfare to push people out of their jobs, something that disproportionately happens to women and minorities first.
You should be ashamed of yourself. -
Look for recertified or reconditioned drives 🙂
@simonzerafa@infosec.exchange @adafruit@fosstodon.org
I've been eyeing but its hard to pay brand new prices for something that's not unused.
Especially something as consumable as a hard drive. -
@adafruit@fosstodon.org jesus fucking christ i thought adafruit was chill
@lea @adafruit Saw elsewhere that there was extensive drama with one of their top brass making a bunch of accounts to harass a trans woman on. If you're keen on looking into it go ahead, however I don't feel like digging through pig shit to find the posts and they've incriminated themselves as to which gang they're in enough here than now I don't really have to.

@adafruit Cue the "look at all the ABUSE we're getting!" (Pearl clutch, gasping wrist across the forehead) "Looks like its time to close our Mastodon account and go someplace safer (whiter) where AI is welcome!"

@adafruit@fosstodon.org Y'all were trying to sell pork sausages at a vegan convention.
That's why people were mad at you.
It had nothing to do with the fact that the person trying to sell the pork sausages was a woman. -
@mcc @adafruit@fosstodon.org Yeah, I dropped Adafruit when they hired that cop and wrote a puff piece about how cool it was that he used RaspberryPis to illegally surveil Muslims. Then their social media manager had an absolute meltdown when someone politely pointed out how messed up that was.
-
@adafruit@fosstodon.org Shit like this is why I can't upgrade my NAS this year. The machine which stores the VM where my local git server lives, and the pool which contains the repos themselves.
Its why replacing broken parts cost more than buying brand new hardware did two years ago.
Why so many of our fellow open source developers are getting absolutely bombarded by useless pull requests.
AI companies are the reason women like me are gatekept from the tools they need to create and share their creations.
https://mashable.com/article/ai-hard-drive-hdd-shortages-western-digital-sold-out
https://theshamblog.com/an-ai-agent-published-a-hit-piece-on-me/@magic_smoke @adafruit I never buy new HDDs anyway, only refurbs. The new drives are always a ripoff. -
@adafruit Like RaspberryPi, Adafruit is leaving my favorites list for shopping sites.
Holy hell did this miss the mark. Millions of women's works are slurped up by AI everyday and regurgitated at will by an unthinking LLM engine. Recast as a "thinking machine's result" with no renumeration to female artists, authors, and creators. This couldn't be a more masculine way to rob women of their life's work and agency. Even if given for free or under Creative Commons, stripping a project from it's authorhood when a woman made it should be appalling enough.
Please reconsider this position.

I'm an ally; tryin 2 undrstndCopyright/land consolidation/colonial charter companies (colonialism)/slave-based wealth - part of a broad shift to formal, state-backed property regimes & capital accumulation - were for owners/investors, not the public. See 1700s Statute of Ann & US Copyright
Why lean on ugly? Convenience?
I get existential threat from ai - see my pin
Can we get post-scarcity startrek future without #AI?
How?

@feld@friedcheese.us @adafruit@fosstodon.org fair. I have some absolutely ancient 4tb sas drives that where eBay refurb and still work well.
Even if I gotta swap one out of the array every coupla years.
Might honestly be worth it, always figured they'd be a bit unreliable.
Also doesn't do much for the people already reliant on second hand drives, now unable to obtain what they could've had not too long ago for much cheaper. -

Out of probably the ~30 drives I've purchased refurbished over the last 10 years I can only remember one that arrived in poor condition (click of death) and it was immediately replaced
Just don't buy them from shady sellers on eBay would be my recommendation. -

1) Star Trek is a goddamn TV show. Gene Roddenberry had a giant blank space for post-capitalism through the "energy economy" of TOS-DS9 because he had no answers on how to get from there to the other side (at least. Seems Discovery, Starfleet Acad. are on shaky ground with even that.) Visionaries cannot predict bumps in the road, even if it seems they know the way.
2) LLMs are not Artificial Intelligence. As much as a Video Game isn't a parallel universe. Yet people still imbue LLMs with sci-fi tropes like sentience, machine rights, and even Godhood when no proof of any of the sort is evident.
3) Posing "homework" to people who are being oppressed by AI is kind of a dick move; "help me to understand" is just "answer my questions if you want to continue arguing with me" under a different lampshade. My ass is still being asked to get up and turn the damn light on when you're right there.
So, dunk with "you're wrong" if you must. It's the last you'll hear from me.

@adafruit oh my fucking god,,,,, i've lost any respect for you all that i somehow still had. i've probably given you several hundreds of dollars of my own money over the course of a decade or so, so it's really unfortunate to see you go down this path

@adafruit @jpaskaruk @kwayk42 ...and he did.
People who "love AI" usually hate people. Never forget that.

I am actually disabled and I don't use AI. Saying that I'm too stupid to do things myself, that I need Sam Altman's and Elon Musk's slop machine because I can't make things fast enough, is an insult
@burnoutqueen @renedudfield @adafruit but I need the slop machine to make things for my estrogen addled brain /s

@sefr @adafruit @jpaskaruk @kwayk42 oh theres actually those who think games and fiction are parallel universes
-someone who ran into such beings
-
@mcc not to mention they harassed several people and revealed private personal info (mine) recently. all in "defense" of anyone critical of their ai usage.
-
@tom_verbeure Oh boy, I thought Adafruit was the parent corporation to the Raspberry Pi company. I don't know how that got in my head. 😅

@adafruit Fedi is just AI-phobic and sometimes hateful a la Twitter... I really doubt this is sexism.
@golemwire @adafruit ‘AI-phobic’ is a *wild* way to describe it, but yeah like, I can pretty much guarantee everyone complaining about Adafruit doing this are also complaining about every other company engaging in slop, not calling guys ‘savvy early adopters’.
Also: The ‘write up’ was a paragraph attributed to Phillip Torrone, and then tooted on the generic adafruit accounted, so yeah, can't say I follow that one at all.
