It's time for building work.

  • Paint samples arrived today and it was obvious which was gonna work better so I ordered a full 2.5l can.

Only to get an email back saying they can't make that colour in that varnish. Weird. That was literally the only actually blue they said they'd do last time they said they couldn't deliver what the website let me order.

After some discussion they have referred it to the Tainting Supervisor and it's apparently going to be here Monday.

Similarly for the wood, failed to arrive again today. They reckon Monday this time really for reals. Fingers crossed coz the carpenter can't do more until the wood arrives really and he's going on holiday this time next week.

So assuming the wood comes, four days to build the doors and finish off the walls of the closet and stuff.

Hopefully it can all be done in that time. Or at least the hard bits leaving the easy stuff for the less carpentery builder.

    Wood arrived!

    Not until lunch time though.

After lunch he's built the dresser desk and the closet.

Not much more than door and drawers left.

Two workers tomorrow apparently, maybe one will start the painting.

The closet looks to be complete other than the door. Almost everything looks complete other than doors and draws. And painting of course.

We're sure of the size of the doors which are to be mirror-backed now so ordered those.

Two more days before carpenter goes on holiday. Suspect there may be work for him to do when he gets back. Lots of doors to make. Draws surely each take ages and there's five of those.

They've been cutting doors into shape all day. Some have hinges on them, but none are hung onto the cupboards so no point in any photos.

None have any panels yet either.

Oh, or the holes I need for all the cables that'll have to go everywhere for speakers and lights. Will have to remember to ask about that tomorrow.

Lots of doors now hung. Apparently the "panel" doors will really just be solid boards with edges glued on. He reckons they will paint before they do that bit.

And with that the carpenter is off to Egypt for a week. Back a week on Tuesday to build all the window doors for the top.

Meanwhile the other builder will be in doing the painting and other smaller stuff.

Estimate is to finish two weeks tomorrow. 🤞

Door hung on the big closet, and the small wardrobe, and cut on all the small headboard flaps though they aren't attached yet. Some more wood cuts to the right shape scattered around. Painting may begin on Monday since we're out of wood again. More ordered.

Mirrors arrived this morning. The big one is fucking huge.

Short day today as the worker had to leave early for some sort of appointment.

Still, the hanging rails are up inside the wardrobe, the racks are up in the closet to support the adjustable shelves in there, the fixed shelves at the side of the cupboard are up.

I thought I smelled paint for a while before he left but turns out that was "wood filler", apparently filling the holes in the natural wood?

Not sure what this frame will be. Is it the edges for a panel door? Is it the start of the windowed doors for the top cupboards? Dunno.

A day without work with the worker calling in sick.

Seems to be better today though.

We have shelves in the closet and another frame is in construction here. Presumably for the window doors.

Painting has begun. Colour would ideally be half a shade darker but getting varnish for pine in blue seems to be surprisingly tricky. Maybe another coat will help but don't want to lose the wood grain under it.

Might have tried to get a slightly more pale wall if I'd known. So many things you don't really know until you see 'em.

Feels like I'm being gassed, opened up all the windows and doors. This paint takes a long time to try and apparently stinks up the flat while it does so.

More of the door frames ready or the window doors made, wood cut for the big mirrored blinds, some other stuff I can't really tell. Lots of clean up for a two man painting day tomorrow.

So much painting gone on here that we're out of paint. Apparently the paint is usually watery and is eaten up by the wood like a hungry teen eats cheese.

More paint should hopefully be arriving over the weekend or on Monday.

Looking good. Would have definitely tried to pick a lighter colour for the walls if I'd known what the wood would end up like though.

More to be done on Monday before the master carpenter gets back on Tuesday.

I think today's worker is the owner of the company, he certainly is the assessor.

He worked a lot later than those without the vested interest there. 😆 I finished work at my job before he did! 🤭

All the wood was sanded down and remaining nude wood given some paint. We have a test plank in the foreground of the first picture here which is painted with a second coat of paint. Seems likely we lose all the wood grain when doing that, and so will prefer the paler look where it's obviously made of wood not paint.

Won't really know for sure till it's dry. Prefer the colour a bit darker like that but if we're hiding the wood grain we might as well have used MDF instead of pine. We're after something clearly made of wood.

Another area is test-painted with just the clearcoat top varnish as a second layer. That's likely to be right, just a bit more shiny and protected.

The carpenter proper is back from holiday and starts tomorrow. He has a lot of drawers and doors to build and edging to attach to make the door panels. Still hoping at least the carpentry will be pretty much all done by the end of the week but likely some painting and touching up still to do next week. Hopefully by the end of Tuesday because I'm not really able to be here all day each day for most of the two weeks after that.

Carpenter called away to an emergency leak elsewhere today. Trouble with having a carpenter who is also a plumber I guess. 😆

The frames for the window doors look to be mostly completed, the doors that will make the blinds are up (though probably presumably will come down again to have mirrors attached? Maybe?). Lots of holes in wood filled. Stupid natural products. MDF don't have no holes, or grain at all.

Trying to render an image big enough to fill the wall there. 2m x 1m. Keeps crashing my machine. Going to have to try and render it in bits or something.

Three drawers is the number of drawers that can be done in a day apparently. Leaving the two hardest ones (too small to operate inside the box and hang the rails I guess?)

Carpenter is very much looking forward to not having to drive to North London every day so don't think we'll get more than just tomorrow out of him.

Drawers work well though, feeling more solid than the flatpack half-cardboard Ikea/Argos stuff I'm more used to.

Been playing with what kind of image to use in the fake window. Some beachy sunset as though looking out from a beach bar?

Maybe that's too lazy just based on the window blind I made a couple of years back. Will I sleep paranoid I'm being watched by Krux?

Hummm. This chair seems to fit better than any stool.

But will it fit under the dresser?...

Probably? My measurements in the model aren't great. I was way off in the length of the room it turned out.

Measured the gap under the dresser desk.

The clearance under the desk is 61cm.

What to make of the measurements diagram for that chair then?

The seat is at 46cm but how high are those arms? More or less than 15cm? 🤔

    Probably approximately that, yeah.

What do people think about mattresses?

    Innerspring? Foam? Some kinda hybrid?

I'm not doing water again. I don't recall ever sleeping on a foam one.

A day of lots of painting, most of which is more or less invisible on a photograph coz it's the clear-coat varnish over the top of the wood stain. Does it look more shiny? To the eye it does, but even that may fade as it dries. The clear coat is important to protect the wood though.

For the first time all the exposed wood is blue though. Hurray.

One more days work tomorrow, then we're off for six days while I have to work and play away.

Another day of mostly painting and double-varnishing. Though the chests also have lids now, and all the window doors are painted ready for the windows.

We now pause for a while because I can't be here all day every day due to my surprisingly hectic calendar over the next couple of weeks.

A couple of days of just layering varnish and painting which didn't change anything visibly enough to bother with photos. But today, the windowed doors are starting to be completed. Three of them up.

This is what really makes the difference and makes it suddenly reminiscent of the Tardis.

Hopefully it'll be finished next week, they say. But they have said that before. The windowed doors have to be finished, the detailing to make the doors look panelled, handles, holes for cables, there's a bit of coving I decided to add to help carry wires and lights across the gap above the desk. More painting. Mirrors to be glued to doors.

    We shall see :fingers_crossed:

All the windowed doors up now, though some adjustment of hinges is still needed. Lots of the trim to fake the panels painted. There's struts everywhere.

No work being done tomorrow, two men in on Wednesday and Friday.

He still seems to think it might be finished by the end of the week. I still find myself doubting it.

Very glad to have a day off building and off work and off having to get up in the mornings tomorrow. I can lie in bed until noon if I want for the first time since October I think.
