This is Khaled from Rafah, #Gaza, #Palestine. How are you? How was your day?

Today I bought meat for my family to eat. It had been 8 months since I ate any kind of meat. I bought 1 kg of chicken for my whole family (wings). 1 kg costs 50 shekels today, about $15. I bought 1 kg for 18 people 😅😂

We tasted a little bit of meat today 🥹

In the past 2 years, there’s been so many days when I didn’t eat anything and I went to sleep so hungry. And even when I can eat, it’s mostly plain, tasteless food, like plain chickpeas, plain rice, or plain lentils. I’ve lost so much weight, I don’t recognise myself when I look in the mirror or on pictures. Everyone around me has lost so much weight.

Food prices are still very high though. The Israeli army isn’t letting a lot of food aid into the Gaza Strip. People who handle food aid only keep it for their own family. And no one in my family handles food aid. Some of it also gets stolen by gangs and militias. But the army mostly lets private merchants in anyway, who still sell food at a high cost, while nobody has any money left.

Farmers in Gaza used to raise their own chickens, but no one is currently doing it due to the destruction of all farms and the Israeli army's control over most of the land, according to Trump and Netanyahu’s “peace” plan.

This is why food is still too expensive for nutrition to be reliable and consistent, but this is a great first step and an occasion to rejoice. I hope we can buy more in the coming days. And we can buy larger quantities to fill our stomachs 🥹
