Is there any way to access my files if I can't login as myself? My standard login suddenly gives me a flashing, crazy screen with no interaction except a moving cursor. But I can still login from a USB as a live session user, so I wondered if I could get to those files from there. I've been trying to use su - in the terminal but it doesn't recognize my actual username. I really need to rescue some files from this computer. Any tips are appreciated.#BodhiLinux #AskFedi #Linux #Ubuntu

@dillyd From my experience, the Mastodon web interface has (had?) trouble disabling animations for .webm images. I have that setting turned off as well, and so far, I've only seen .webm images be animated without me hovering over them. Haven't seen this happen with profile pictures yet, but it would be a plausible explanation at least

any networking nerds want to point me at where i might look to diagnose home network sluggishness? basically, i'm getting between 20kB/s and 1MB/s transferring files via rsync over ssh. source (primary driver laptop) and destination (multimedia server) machines are both hard-wired to the same router. maybe i expect too much? was thinking like 50MB/s....mtr results (no idea if this is good, bad, or relevant):Loss%: 0.0%Snt: 10Last: 63.0Avg: 66.2Best: 59.7Wrst: 71.9StDev: 4.1#AskFedi

@mayintoronto a house.I was lucky enough to get a mortgage years ago when such things were feasible. When we were able, we overpaid, reducing the capital, and therefore both the interest and the monthly payments. Our current monthly repayment is a small fraction of what we'd be paying to rent, and we're also on a deal vastly better than any to be had now.Things have changed a lot since we first bought - we have two neurodiverse kids, I'm physically disabled, and the world has descended into omnicrisis. The headroom we have from our housing costs being so low is making a huge difference to our daily lives.
